This Friday edition of the Waiver Report is pretty tight end heavy, and for good reason. While most of the big-name tight ends deal with injuries, several lesser names could be rounding into tight end relevance. If you can afford to make a drop elsewhere, it might not be a bad idea to roster an extra tight end (or defense) for one week, just to be sure you are covered on Sunday.

Vernon Davis, TE, WAS (2%) – It certainly seems like Jordan Reed will play Sunday night, but it is probably a good idea to add Vernon Davis as insurance just in case. In shallow leagues, Jared Cook (27%) is a possible Reed replacement as well.

Dwayne Allen, TE, NE (8%) – Rob Gronkowski’s owners will have an easier decision than Reed’s owners, since the Patriots play at 1 pm ET. There is no guarantee Allen sees a significant increase in routes or targets with Gronk out, but he is worth considering in a deep league, especially if any of the Patriots’ receivers are out as well.

Vance McDonald, TE, PIT (1%) – Jesse James returned to a limited practice Thursday, but if he is out, McDonald would likely soak up most of James’s snaps and targets. McDonald would be startable in deep leagues if James is out. McDonald is probably worth stashing in deep leagues as well, as he could pass James on the depth chart sooner than later.

Green Bay Packers DEF (51%) – The jury is still out on Green Bay’s defense through two weeks. They looked great against Seattle’s garbage offensive line and were far less impressive at Atlanta in Week 2. We are unlikely to learn much about the Packers’ defense in this game, as they face one of the worst offenses in the league. If you struck out on adding a defense earlier in the week, you could do far worse than Andy Dalton at Lambeau Field.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DEF (26%) – There are a lot of cheap defenses with strong matchups this week, so if Sam Bradford plays, there are probably better options available than Tampa Bay. That being said, Minnesota managed just nine points last week with Case Keenum under center, and the Bucs could be in for another big game after feasting on Mike Glennon in Week 2.

Jaron Brown, WR, ARI (3%) – J.J. Nelson was limited in practice Thursday, and it appears John Brown will miss his second consecutive game. Jaron Brown will probably be useful in deep leagues for as long as John Brown is out, and he would be startable if Nelson misses time as well.

Markus Wheaton, WR, CHI (3%) – Wheaton was removed from the injury report Thursday, and should make his season debut Sunday. In a week in which Jermaine Kearse and Rashard Higgins were the hot wide receiver pickups, Wheaton has a chance at a similar breakout. Someone has to catch passes for the Bears.

Benny Cunningham, RB, CHI (0%) – Jordan Howard is dealing with a shoulder injury, and even if he plays Sunday, there is a chance the injury can keep him out going forward. It seems extremely unlikely 5’6” Tarik Cohen will get much more than 15 touches in any game, in which case the rest of the running back touches would likely go to Cunningham.

Damien Williams (0%) and Kenyan Drake, RB, MIA (1%) – It does not appear Jay Ajayi is in danger of sitting Sunday despite missing practice Wednesday and Thursday. That being said, Ajayi has an injury history and had 30 touches Sunday, so his owners probably need to be prepared. Miami’s backfield would almost certainly be a timeshare if Ajayi misses time, with Drake getting most of the targets. Williams is probably the Ajayi handcuff you want, though Drake would likely be useful for PPR.

Davontae Booker, RB, DEN (2%) – Booker may not return until Week 4, but even if that is the case, he is probably C.J. Anderson’s handcuff. It appears unlikely Denver would give Jamaal Charles significantly more than the 10 touches he got in Weeks 1 and 2, which means Booker would probably soak up most of Anderson’s touches should Anderson go down.

Ryan Griffin, TE, HOU (0%) – Griffin and teammate Stephen Anderson returned to practice Wednesday, and if either can emerge as the top tight end target for Houston, they coulud have a lot of value. Only the Eagles had more tight end targets than the Texans last season, and while that probably had more to do with Brock Osweiler than anything else, Griffin does have some upside with C.J. Fiedorowicz on IR.

Willie Snead, WR, NO (73%) – I won’t usually mention players with such high ownership, but Snead is eligible to return in Week 4, and I expect he will be near 100 percent owned at this time next week. If you can find space on your bench, you should stash him now.
