Game Play Predictions

Boston Red Sox

  • The Red Sox rank 1st in team batting average (.274), OPS (.830), runs (244), home runs (69) and RBI (233) against right-handed pitching this season.
  • Gerrit Cole ranks 2nd in the majors with 109 strikeouts but the Red Sox have struck out the fifth fewest times against right-handed pitching this season.
  • Boston will be without Mookie Betts which is a major blow to their lineup as he is a leading MVP candidate.
  • Andrew Benintendi is Boston’s hottest hitter right now, batting .444 with two doubles, two triples and two home runs over the last seven days.
  • J.D. Martínez is tied for the league lead in home runs with 18
  • Mitch Moreland has two doubles, two triples and a home run over the last week. He has an OPS of 1.035 vs right-handed pitching this season.
  • Xander Bogaerts had a RBI double in last night’s contest.  He has two home runs over the last seven days but is also hitting just .259 during that stretch.

Houston Astros

  • The Astros were the league’s top hitting team against southpaws last season.  This year they rank fourth in team batting average (.272) and fifth in team OPS (.786).
  • They have a tough matchup against Chris Sale who ranks second in the AL in strikeouts and in the top 10 in ERA and WHIP.
  • Houston ranks 13th in fewest strikeouts against left-handed pitching this season.
  • Astros leadoff hitter George Springer is hitting .305 with an OPS of .968 against left-handed pitching this season.
  • Alex Bregman is really struggling against southpaws this season after crushing them in 2017.  He is also hitting just .154 over the last seven days.
  • José Altuve is 8-for-21 (.381) with a homer off Chris Sale .  He is also hitting .548 with three doubles, one triple and two home runs over the last week.
  • Carlos Correa is hitting just .200 over the last week with two doubles and a home run.  He is hitting .311 with an OPS of .918 against southpaws this season.

Pre-Game Props

Q1: Either team scores in the 1st inning.

I went with NO for my answer here.  I expect both starters to get off to a fast start given how dominant they will be.  I expect the hitters to be a bit too aggressive early on.

Q2: Which team makes more plate appearances in the 1st inning?

I went with Houston here but in reality I expect both teams to go down in order.  If Houston does make more plate appearances it’s because of how HOT José Altuve is right now.

Q3: Both teams record a base hit in the 1st inning.

I went with NO here as I am expecting both pitchers to get off to fast starts and potentially both recording 1-2-3 innings to begin the game.

Q4: A Boston batter strikes out in the 1st inning.

I went with YES for my reply here.  I am thinking Xander Bogaerts gets the strike out here as he is slumping a bit right now and tends to be a bit of a free swinger.

Q5: Gerrit Cole throws 13 or fewer pitches in the 1st inning.

I went with YES for this question as I expect the Red Sox to be aggressive early in counts and for that to play in the favor of Cole to get him out of the inning early.

Q6: Two or more Red Sox batters see five or more pitches in the 1st inning.

I went with NO for this question as I am expecting Cole to throw less than 13 pitches in the 1st inning.  These two props go hand in hand in my opinion.

Q7: Andrew Benintendi takes the first pitch for a called strike.

I went with YES for this one as I expect Cole to fire a first pitch fast ball for a strike and for Benintendi to take that pitch.
