Coach Geoff Ward believes the signing of Jacob Markstrom will provide the Flames with a boost.

"You can’t have a lot of success in this league without having good goaltending," Ward said. "We feel like we have acquired a real, real good goaltender in the league…it allows us to play with confidence." Markstrom signed with Calgary this offseason on a six-year, $36 million contract. The former Vancouver netminder finished fourth in Vezina Trophy voting last season.

Nick Robertson will be looking to earn a roster spot with the Maple Leafs going into the 2020-21 season.

Robertson stayed in Canada after Toronto was eliminated from the postseason because he felt it was his best chance to stay ready for the upcoming campaign. He scored one goal and played in four games versus Columbus during the team's qualifying round defeat. "I think I’ve adapted to it now and I think the confidence is up there for myself again," he said. Robertson, who turned 19 in September, has plenty of offensive upside and could earn a position in Toronto's top-nine forward group going into the year.

Erik Gudbranson has no problem being a part of a rebuild.

In fact, Gudbranson has positive memories of his early years with the Florida Panthers when they were rebuilding. “It has an uncanny resemblance to my first years in Florida, going through that rebuild and really being a piece to that puzzle,” Gudbranson said. “I would say throughout my career those were the most purposeful years of my career in the sense that you had a position, a role and an opportunity to get better every single day. It’s so much fun coming to the rink every day knowing that you’re just going to get that little bit better every day. I’ve recently a number of my former teammates coming up here. It’s fun to see them working at their games and trying to get better. If you can find the right mix, it’s a fun situation to be a part of.” This time he'll be in a different situation though. Back then, Gudbranson was one of those young players growing with each day, but now he's a 28-year-old with 518 career NHL games under his belt. The Senators will be looking to him to be a veteran presence and help guide their younger players through the rebuild. He should be up for that task.

Kirby Dach said he was much more confident during the postseason and it's something he is hoping to build on going into the 2020-21 season.

"I know I have a lot more to give, a lot more to grow as a person and as a player," said Dach, who is participating in Team Canada's World Junior selection camp. "I want to continue to develop along this path and hopefully become an impact player for many years to come in Chicago." He feels more confident in his shot, but he has also showcased some impressive passing plays during Canada's training camp. Dach is slated to take on a larger role with the Blackhawks during his sophomore season and he appears to be up to the challenge.

Anthony Cirelli's agent, Pat Morris, said there's "nothing new to report" when he was asked how contract negotiations are going with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It doesn't sound like there has been much progress in that regard between the two sides, but that could change after the Lightning announced the signing of Mikhail Sergachev to a three-year contract on Wednesday. Cirelli and Erik Cernak, who are important restricted free agents, still need to be re-signed by Tampa Bay.

Jake DeBrusk is aiming to get stronger and create more "chaos around the net" during the 2020-21 season.

"There's no reason I can't average a hit per game," said DeBrusk shortly after the Bruins announced that a two-year contract between the two sides had been reached. The 24-year-old forward will be looking to disrupt more plays in the hope of contributing more offensively. DeBrusk had 19 goals and 35 points in 65 games last season.

Tampa Bay has re-signed Mikhail Sergachev to a three-year contract.

The deal has an average annual value of $4.8 million. In 70 games last season, Sergachev registered 10 goals, 34 points, 58 penalty minutes, 99 blocks and 106 hits. He also added three goals and 10 points in 25 playoff matches en route to helping the Lightning win the Stanley Cup. Tampa Bay still has to sign key RFAs Anthony Cirelli and Erik Cernak following Sergachev's new deal.

Lukas Dostal's loan to Ilves of Finland's Liiga has come to an end.

In 11 appearances this season in Finland's top league, Dostal had a 10-1-0 record with a 1.64 goals-against average, a .941 save percentage and one shutout. The Anaheim Ducks chose the 20-year-old netminder in the third round (85th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. Dostal is poised to head to North America to prepare for the 2020-21 season.
