Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Hirokazu Sawamura is not a candidate for the team's closer role.

That would seemingly mean that it's between the incumbent Matt Barnes and addition Adam Ottavino, with Barnes the most likely to begin the season in the role. Barnes should continue to be the first Red Sox reliever off the board in fantasy drafts.

Nick Madrigal went 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI against Cleveland on Wednesday.

The three hits bring Madrigal's average up to .278 on the season. The 24-year-old second baseman has been hitting near the bottom of the order but has still managed to score seven runs. Madrigal has struck out only one time in 37 plate appearances, showing his elite contact skill. He's a safe bet to hit for a good batting average and contribute double-digit stolen bases over the course of the season.

Yermin Mercedes went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI on Wednesday against Cleveland.

Mercedes continued his unexpected breakout with another multi-hit game to bring his batting average up to .500 (19-for-38). The 28-year-old designated hitter broke the game open with a three-run blast in the first inning off of Zach Plesac that left the bat at 111.2 miles per hour and traveled 431 feet. Mercedes has only struck out four times and has drawn four walks, displaying excellent discipline and contact skills in the early going.

Zach Plesac allowed six runs on seven hits over just 2/3 of an inning Wednesday in a loss against the White Sox.

It was about as bad as it could get for Plesac in a disastrous start in which he failed to get out of the first inning. A three-run blast by Yermin Mercedes to put Chicago up 4-0 broke things open against the 26-year-old right-hander. Three more base hits would plate two more runners before Plesac was pulled. He'll try to put this one behind him against these same White Sox next week in Cleveland.

Ronald Acuna went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three runs scored, and four RBI on Wednesday in a 6-5 loss to the Marlins.

There is no hitter more entertaining or performing at a higher level than Ronald Acuna is at this point. The 23-year-old superstar put Atlanta on the board in the third inning with a shot to center field off of Nick Neidert that left the bat at 110.8 miles per hour. Two innings later, he'd hit a double off of Neidert at the same exit velocity. With a .447/.500/1.000 slash line, Acuna is locked in to start the season.

Michael Fulmer earned his first win since June of 2018 on Wednesday, limiting the Astros to two runs over five innings in the Tigers' 6-4 victory.

Fulmer was rocking and rolling early on, retiring the first 11 batters he faced. He then gave up two straight hits before escaping in the fourth inning. It looked like he was going to get out of the fifth, as well, but Jason Castro slugged a mammoth two-out, two-run home run to center field. Fulmer averaged 95.4 mph and topped out at 97.4 mph with his sinker, which is a nice jump up from where he was last year as a starter. It was an encouraging first start of the season, even as the Astros' lineup was missing a few key regulars. Fulmer has some streaming appeal next week against the Pirates.

Lance McCullers hit a speed bump Wednesday, getting charged with six runs over just 3 2/3 frames in a loss to the Tigers.

Things got out of hand in a hurry in the second inning as McCullers hit a batter and walked a batter before Akil Baddoo sliced one down the left-field line for an RBI double. The Tigers plated a couple more runs in the frame on a groundout and an RBI single. McCullers was yanked after hitting another batter to load the bases with two out in the fourth. Unfortunately, reliever Joe Smith let all three inherited runners score. The righty had pitched well in his first two starts (both against the A's), although he's now issued three walks in each of his first three outings. McCullers' next start, unfortunately, will come at Coors Field.

Jeimer Candelario went 3-for-5 and drove in a couple runs on Wednesday in Houston.

Candelario's two RBI came on a single during the Tigers' three-run fourth inning. He also added an infield single and a double. Candelario has picked up where he left off this year after last year's bounce-back season and over the last four games has reached base 12 times.

Yimi Garcia pitched a clean tenth inning with two strikeouts to earn the save against Atlanta on Wednesday.

Garcia entered the game in the bottom of the tenth inning to protect the one-run lead for the Marlins. The 30-year-old right-hander faced the top of the order and got Ronald Acuna to strike out swinging on the fastball. After a fly out by Freddie Freeman, Garcia got Marcell Ozuna to whiff on the slider to end the game. He appears fully entrenched as the Marlins closer.

Charlie Morton surrendered five runs on seven hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Marlins.

Three runs Morton allowed came on a shot to center field by Jazz Chisholm in the third inning with two men on base. The 37-year-old right-hander otherwise limited damage and kept Atlanta in the game with 62-of-96 pitches going for strikes and finished with 15 whiffs -- seven on the curveball -- and a 38 percent CSW rate (called strikes plus whiffs). Morton is in line to face the Yankees in New York next week.

Nick Neidert allowed three runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings on Wednesday against Atlanta.

Neidert surrendered a two-run shot to Ronald Acuna in the third inning and an RBI single to Freddie Freeman in the fifth. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 42-of-76 pitches for strikes and induced only three whiffs on the day. He's in line for a home matchup against the Orioles next week.

Bryan Garcia bailed out Jose Cisnero to earn his second save of the season on Wednesday in Houston.

It was Cisnero who Tigers manager A.J. Hinch called upon in the ninth with a three-run lead after Gregory Soto pitched the eighth. Cisnero didn't retire a batter, loading the bases on two walks and a single before being pulled. Garcia walked a batter himself to force in a run but sandwiched around that were two strikeouts and a shallow flyout. He now has two of the three saves in the Tigers' bullpen this season. The other belongs to Soto, who we still like best moving forward. It's not a great situation for fantasy purposes, though.

Jean Segura went 2-for-3 with a solo home run on Wednesday against the Mets.

Segura provided the only run for the Phillies with a solo blast off of David Peterson in the fifth inning that left the bat at 100.1 miles per hour. The 31-year-old added a base hit to raise his average to .295 in the early going. While Segura doesn't stand out in any particular area, he's been a solid contributor across the board and is hitting in a deep lineup that should produce plenty of run scoring opportunities.
