Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that the Yankees are in talks with the Pirates regarding right-hander Jameson Taillon.

Well, that escalated quickly. Feinsand reported earlier that Taillon could be the next player jettisoned by the rebuilding Pirates in the next day or two as they embark on their full-scale teardown. He also notes that nothing is done yet, but the Pinstripes appear to be emerging as the frontrunners to deal for him. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the two teams have been discussing a potential deal over the last few days, while Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette adds that his sources indicate the Pirates have been weighing offers from multiple teams. The 28-year-old righty missed the entire 2020 season after undergoing the second Tommy John surgery of his professional career. He's expected to be fully healthy and ready to go for the start of the upcoming 2021 campaign. He owns a 3.67 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 419/117 K/BB ratio over 466 innings (82 starts) in his major-league career.

Corey Dickerson went 3-for-3 with a double as the Marlins' No. 2 hitter on Monday.

Dickerson seems poised to keep leading off against righties, but Don Mattingly dropped him to second against a lefty today. We're not sure what the point of that was; the second spot is about as important as the first and Dickerson should be hitting closer to sixth versus southpaws and sitting against the tougher ones. Still, it is shows some flexibility, we suppose.

Kirby Yates (elbow) is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut later this week.

Yates has been eased into action this spring following surgery last August to remove bone chips from his pitching elbow. However, Scott Mitchell of The Sports Network hears that Yates "has looked good in live BP sessions" and is nearly ready to pitch in games. Yates is the favorite to open the season as the Blue Jays' closer.

Andrew Heaney surrendered four earned runs over 2 1/3 innings in a Cactus League start Monday against the Brewers.

Heaney actually got lifted from the game in the first inning, after recording only one out in his first 23 pitches, but then re-entered to begin the bottom of the second. He yielded four hits and issued three walks while recording only one strikeout versus the 13 total batters he faced. The 29-year-old is going just outside the top-200 in the average Yahoo draft after posting a 4.46 ERA and 70/19 K/BB ratio over 66 2/3 innings in 2020.

Yadiel Hernandez went 2-for-2 and knocked in a run Monday as the Nationals topped the Mets 9-5.

The 33-year-old Hernandez, a Cuban defector, needed MLB to adopt a universal DH a couple of years ago. Still, even that might not have been enough to get him a long look, in part because he didn't arrive in the U.S. until he was 29. He hit .323/.406/.604 in Triple-A in 2019, but the Nationals still didn't give him much of a try last year; he hit .192/.214/.423 in 28 PA. He'll return to Triple-A this year.

Ross opted out last year, so this was his first game action since last March. He's probably going to open up as the Nationals' fifth starter if he gets through the spring OK, though because of a desire to manage his innings, he could alternate with Austin Voth and Erick Fedde at times.

Brandon Woodruff (back) yielded two runs over two innings of work in his Cactus League debut Monday against the Angels.

Woodruff is just now getting into Cactus League action after being bothered by some minor back stiffness in the early part of Brewers camp. He worked a 1-2-3 first inning on Monday, even striking out Mike Trout, before surrendering back-to-back homers to Anthony Rendon and Justin Upton to begin the top of the second. The 28-year-old right-hander will probably try to go three innings next time out and can hopefully do a better job of limiting the longball. At this point, he has a good shot to be fully stretched out by Opening Day.

Yamamoto's own error led to the two runs in the first inning. It was a solid showing otherwise, but Yamamoto is almost certainly going to open this year at the alternate site. He would have had a better chance of making his old team, but the Marlins bumped him from the 40-man roster in January.

Kyle Freeland pitched three scoreless frames in a Cactus League start Monday afternoon against the Reds.

Freeland scattered two hits and one walk while tallying two strikeouts. The 27-year-old left-hander posted a 4.33 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 46/23 K/BB ratio across 70 2/3 innings (13 starts) last season for Colorado and currently projects to open the 2021 regular season as the team's No. 2 starter.

Tejay Antone struck out three batters over three scoreless innings in a Cactus League start Monday against the Rockies.

Antone is now up to eight strikeouts through five scoreless innings this spring as he tries to stake his claim on a spot in the Reds' season-opening starting rotation. More than likely, the 27-year-old right-hander will wind up filling a swingman-type role. He had a shiny 2.80 ERA and 45/16 K/BB ratio in his first 35 1/3 major league innings (four starts, nine relief appearances) last summer for Cincinnati.

J.D. Davis walked all three times up Monday, but he also committed a run-scoring error at third base against the Nationals.

News came down earlier today that the Mets are interested in Maikel Franco. He'd be a steadier defensive option at third base for the team, though one without Davis's offensive upside. It'd be a shame if Davis weren't a regular this year, but his defense is rough enough that the Mets might be able to do better. Luis Guillorme might even be able to make some in-roads there if any of last year's offensive improvement carries over.

David Price fired a scoreless inning in his Cactus League debut Monday versus the White Sox.

Price entered in the fourth inning, in relief of Julio Urias, and retired the side on 11 pitches with one strikeout. His fastball sat around 93 mph. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters before Monday's game that the veteran left-hander will fill "whatever role is best" for the club in 2021, so we could see more relief outings from Price than many were expecting. That's not great for his fantasy upside but could be a fine real-life strategy for the defending World Series champs as they try to keep all of their arms fresh for the duration.
