Playing out of the final threesome, American Express ambassador and World No. 22 Tony Finau crafted a 5-under-par 33-34=67 in the third round of the AmEx for a three-day tally of 15-under 201, up one place into a three-way T1 with Max Homa (65) and Si Woo Kim (67).
This is the 31-year-old's fourth 54-hole lead/co-lead in 171 events, previously 0-for-3 converting. Most recently, he led last season's WM Phoenix Open by one before losing in a playoff to Webb Simpson (69-66-62-70), his second straight loss in extra time when leading/co-leading at the three-quarter mark (2019, WGC-HSBC). The Scottsdale resident is vying for his second TOUR title, first since the 2016 opposite-field Puerto Rico Open 125 starts ago, where he came from one back (T2) with 2-under 70 before prevailing in a two-man playoff (Steve Marino). On nine (of 14) fairways and 15 greens in regulation, he squared bogey-5 at hole 1 (3-putt from 38'9"), ate a double bogey-5 at 13 (watered tee ball), but overcame those with eight birdies at 4, 5, 7, 8, 11 and a hat-trick at 14-16, each from inside of 11 feet. The Utah native will play out of the final threesome in the finale with Homa and Kim.

World No. 36 Justin Rose birdied two of his final three holes toward a 4-under-par 34-34=68 in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational to post 5-under 139, up 22 spots to T7, four shy of 36-hole leader Corey Conners (69).
This is the 40-year-old's 16th API with five previous top 10s, three of those top 3s, most recently a solo 3rd three tries ago in 2018 where he was T17 at halftime (69-71-67-67). He checked in 4-for-6 on the season with two top 25s, a T23 at the Masters three TOUR starts ago, and a T17 at the ZOZO the start prior to that. The Englishman, who arrived off a T54 at last week's WGC-Workday on 5-over 293 (73-71-76-73), also recorded a T2 at the Saudi Int'l three weeks prior to the WGC. On seven (of 14) fairways and 13 greens in regulation, he lost 0.163 strokes around-the-green but gained 2.320 approaching and 2.333 on-the-green with 26 total putts. Rose, who opened with 71 (4 birdies, 3 bogeys), camouflaged two bogey-5s at holes 9 and 15, with six circles at 4, 6, 7, 10, 16 and 17. His split featured two from between 10 and 19 feet, and also banged in a par-saver at 3 from 19'11". "The greens kind of got that little dicey look a little bit late in the day. You felt like the ball wasn't rolling, it was more like it was skating. So, yeah, definitely was very happy with my speed. That's what I worked on after yesterday's round. And, yeah, putted the ball well."

Making his tournament debut, World No. 62 Jordan Spieth styled a 3-under-par 36-33=69 in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational to reach 5-under 139, up eight places to T7, four in arrears of 36-hole leader Corey Conners (69).
This is the fourth time this season in 11 starts that the 27-year-old has been in the top 10 at the midpoint, fourth consecutive. The prior three have resulted in top-15 finishes, including a T15 at the Genesis in his most recent start two weeks ago (68-68-73-71), a T3 at the AT&T Pebble Beach (65-67-71-70) as the 36-hole leader by one, and a T4 at the WM Phoenix Open (67-67-61-72). On nine (of 14) fairways and 11 greens in regulation, the Texan posted 1.383 SG: Off-the-Tee, 1.407 SG: Approach, 0.676 SG: Around, and 3.465 SG: Tee-to-Green. He squared a lone bogey-4 at hole 2 (failed scramble), and then played his final 16 in 4-under, circling 4, 11, 15 and 16, two conventionally from between 14 and 22 feet, and adding a hole-out from off-the-green at 15 with the flat stick from 31'6" away. Spieth recorded 1.818 putts per GIR and 0.204 SG: Putting with 27 total putts. He'll play out of the fifth-to-last twosome on Saturday with Justin Rose. "We got what looks to be anywhere from 10 to 20 mile per hour winds and some rain tomorrow, and then gusts to 25 or 30 on Sunday. So, it's going to be difficult to hit the fairways, which means it's going to be really hard to hit the greens and you got to be out there scrambling. So, I like the idea of coming from -- what am I -- four behind."

Beginning off No. 10 tee, World No. 50 Lanto Griffin tossed up a 4-under-par 35-33=68 in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational for a 36-hole total of 7-under 137, up four places to T3, two shy of leader Corey Conners (69).
When Griffin won his lone TOUR title at last season's Houston Open 35 start ago, he was T17 after 36 holes, six back, and then the 54-hole leader by one (66-74-65-69). This is the fifth time this season in 13 events that he's been in the top 10 at halftime, first since solo 2nd at the Farmers three starts ago, where he eventually finished a season-tying-best T7 (66-70-72-72). On nine (of 14) fairways and 13 greens in regulation, the Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, resident gained 0.685 strokes off-the-tee, 1.728 approaching and 0.537 around-the-green. He squared a lone bogey-5 at hole 8 (forced layup), outpaced by five birdies at 12, 15, 18, 3 and 4, two from between 10 and 25 feet. The 32-year-old posted 1.615 putts per GIR and 1.720 SG: Putting with 27 total putts. He'll play out of the third-to-last twosome in R3 with fellow California native Bryson DeChambeau. "A lot of my good rounds this year have felt kind of high stress, kind of where I don't feel like I'm swinging it that great and I'm kind of scrambling around all over the place. Today it felt pretty comfortable and in control of what I was doing. So that was nice. It was nice to not be all over the place, like I have been the last few months."

World No. 11 Bryson DeChambeau backed up with a 1-under-par 37-34=71 in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, down three spots to solo 6th on 6-under 138, three in arrears of 36-hole leader Corey Conners (69).
This is the fourth time this season in seven starts that the 27-year-old has been in the top 10 at halftime with each of the prior three resulting in top-10 finishes. The most memorable was at his season lid-lifter at the U.S. Open, where he was solo 2nd (one back) and went on to a six-shot romp after laps of 69-68-70-67. That's the SMU product's most recent of seven TOUR wins, and was his first major title in his 16th major start. On eight (of 14) fairways and 10 greens in regulation, he lost 1.332 strokes approaching but gained 1.125 around-the-green and 2.411 off-the-tee, No. 1 in SG: OTT with a cumulative 5.178. The Dallas resident squared three bogey-5s at holes 1, 8 (watered second shot) and 9, offset by four circles at 2 (hole-out from 15'1"), 7, 14 (10'6") and 16, three of those birdie-2s. He registered a commercial 1.900 putts per GIR and -0.534 SG: Putting with 27 total putts. DeChambeau will play out of the third-to-last twosome in R3 with fellow California native Lanto Griffin. "I did not play my best. That's for sure. I didn't get off to a good start. Felt like the wind kind of didn't help me in the situations where I felt like it could have. And wedge game and wedges were, quite honestly, some o the worst I've had in a long time. So I got to go figure that out."

Beginning off No. 10 tee, World No. 9 Patrick Reed labored to a 2-over-par 37-37=74 in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, falling 18 places to T74 on 3-over 147, and missing the cut by one shot. 
A total of 73 pros from a field of 122 pros and one amateur made the 36-hole cut of 2-over 146, nine (T65) on the number. At a pre-tourney 20/1 outright, Reed was highest-up the bookmaker's food chain to hit the road, and was also the highest-ranked OWGRer to bug out. This is his second missed weekend at Bay Hill in six visits, first since debuting in 2013, and his second MC of the season in eight events, first since The American Express three starts ago. The Texan, who checked in off a T9 as defender at last week's WGC-Workday, began the day T56 on 1-over after a 73 (3 birdies, 4 bogeys), and overshadowed three birdies with five bogeys on six (of 14) fairways and 12 greens in regulation. He gained 0.541 strokes approaching but lost 0.617 off-the-tee and posted a dismal 2.000 putts per GIR and -1.195 SG: Putting. For the short week, Reed outbalanced six birdies with nine bogeys and ranked 86th in SG: Approach (-1.178) and 87th in SG: Around (-0.736). Overnight co-leader and past champ Rory McIlroy battled to a 1-under-par 35-36=71 in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational for a 36-hole total of 7-under 137, down two spots to T3, two back of pace-setter Corey Conners.
After kicking off with a seven-birdie one-bogey 66, the 31-year-old co-led with Conners, who tacked on a 69. When he won here in 2018, he was T11 at the midpoint, six back, and went on to a 3-shot victory, wrapping with a day-low and week-tying-low 64 (69-70-67-64). On seven (of 14) fairways and 10 greens in regulation, the South Florida resident lost strokes off-the-tee (-0.495) and around-the-green (-0.313), but gained 0.784 on approach. He squared three bogey-5s at holes 1, 8 and 13 (failed scrambles), slightly outpaced by four birdies at 3, 4, 6 and 12, two from between seven and 18 feet, The Ulsterman posted 1.600 putts per GIR and 1.701 SG: Putting with 26 total putts, including a two par-savers from between seven and 11 feet. "Yeah, today was a bit more of a battle. But stayed patient. I picked off three of the par 5s, which is good around here. A couple of loose tee shots, one on the 8th hole, I made bogey from there. One on 13, I made bogey from there. So hit a few better shots coming down the stretch, but just going to go and work on a couple things here on the range." At halftime, McIlroy ranks 1st in SG: Putting (+5.418) though 100th in SG: Around (-1.531).

Past champ and World No. 93 Martin Laird dialed up a 5-under-par 34-33=67 in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational for a 36-hole total of 8-under 136, up five places to T2, one short of clubhouse leader Corey Conners.
When the Scot won here in his second visit in 2011, he was the 36-hole leader by one and went on to a one-shot victory over Steve Marino on 8-under 280 (70-65-70-75). That was his second TOUR win, and eight starts ago at the Shriners, won his fourth trophy, that one as a 36-hole co-leader (65-63-65-68). On 10 (of 14) fairways and 15 greens in regulation, the 38-year-old posted 1.479 SG: Off-the-Tee, 2.326 SG: Approach, 0.961 SG: Around, and 4.794 SG: Tee-to-Green, currently No. 1 in SG: TTG with a cumulative 8.588. He squared a lone bogey-5 at 15 (missed par-saver from 9'10"), outflanked by an eagle-3 at 12 from 13'8", and four birdies at 2 (hole-out from 20'8" away), 7, 10 and 16, two conventionally from between 17 and 25 feet. The Colorado State alum recorded 1.733 putts per GIR and 0.896 SG: Putting with 29 total putts. "Yeah, obviously good feelings about this place after winning here, but this course, I like it, it's a hard golf course. I like golf courses like that where you really got to pick your way around it and pick your spots to be aggressive. So hopefully I can keep making good decisions the next two rounds and see what happens."

Past champ Robert Gamez swallowed a 20-over-par 47-45=92 during round two of the Arnold Palmer Invitational and was disqualified after his round, with no official reason cited at press time.
The 52-year-old had a rough day at the office. Gamez landed just three greens in regulation and lost 4.054 strokes putting, swallowing a trio of three-jacks on his way around Bay Hill. That resulted in a birdie-free round that included five bogeys, seven double bogeys, and a triple. Gamez was grandfathered into the field this week as a pre-2000 API winner. His inclusion in the field did not bump anyone else out. At press time there is no official reason for his DQ but it's safe to assume he either failed to sign his scorecard after the round or signed an incorrect scorecard.

Max Homa is feeling the effects of playing seven weeks in a row but it's not showing on the golf course, styling a 2-under-par 35-35=70 during round two of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, currently good for a share of eighth place with play still in progress on Friday afternoon.
Homa has played steady golf each of the last two days and leaned on his flat stick to bail him out when needed. Homa has gained 5.2 strokes putting through 36 holes which is currently 4th in the field. That included a trio of putts converted from outside of 11 feet today and a hole-out birdie from the fringe (22'7") which was also with the putter in hand. Homa is playing on fumes right now after adding the WGC event into his schedule after winning at Riviera. "This is definitely the most tired I've ever been, both legs and my brain, but it's kind of good at the same point because I feel like I'm kind of sleepwalking through some of these rounds and it's kind of a good thing, because I'm obviously playing really well and almost not thinking about anything, just playing." The California native deserves a breather but it's hard to walk away from the table when you're on a heater.

Matthew Fitzpatrick tossed together a 1-under-par 37-34=71 during round two of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, climbing onto 4-under 140 with two days remaining.
The Englishman arrived with a runner-up finish and T9 in his last two trips to Bay Hill. He's put himself right back in the hunt this week thanks to some steady striking (27 GIR) and smooth putting (+3.3 SG: Putting). His highlights today included a trio of par-savers from 19'9", 11'2", and 13'6" at the 15th, 2nd, and 9th, respectively. "I actually felt like I hit the ball solid and hit a lot of good shots and didn't really put myself out of position, which I think is the key around here." His steady striking has resulted in just three bogeys all week and more importantly, nothing worse than bogey. The young Englishman remains in search of his first PGA TOUR title.

Sungjae Im gave himself a lot of good scoring chances and turned them into a 2-under-par 36-34=70 during round two of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, reaching the halfway mark on 5-under 139 which is currently tied for a share of fourth place with play still in progress.
The young Korean striped 13-of-14 fairways and landed 13 greens in regulation. The driving was solid but the pins seemed to have a forcefield around them. He failed to give himself any scoring chances from inside of 10 feet but did have seven looks from the 11-to-16 foot range, converting on just one of them. Instead, he did most of his damage from an even longer-range. Im rolled home a trio of putts from outside of 20 feet including a 22'3" eagle splash at the par-5 16th. The 22-year-old walked off the course ranked 3rd strokes gained: off-the-tee this week and 4th in putting. He'll need to tidy up the rest of his game if he wants to find himself in the mix on Sunday afternoon. Im has posted third-place finishes in each of his first two API appearances and he's on pace for another strong showing this week. He continues to do a lot of his best work in the state of Florida.
