Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Nationals have emerged as a possibility to sign free agent left-hander Brad Hand.

The Nationals don't have an experienced closer on their roster -- with Tanner Rainey currently the most likely candidate to fill that role -- so adding an accomplished veteran with ninth-inning experience seems like it would be a wise investment. With so many other teams believed to be in the mix though, it's unclear if the Nationals will be willing to match the highest offer. The Angels, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Astros, White Sox and Mets have all been linked to Hand at some point this offseason. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported Saturday that the southpaw could make his final decision before the end of the weekend.

It was an efficient 31-pitch pitch outing for Arihara, who surrendered three runs on five hits and a walk in his Cactus League debut last Tuesday versus the White Sox. The 28-year-old right-hander signed a two-year, $6.2 million deal with the Rangers this winter after registering a 3.46 ERA, 1.168 WHIP, and 106/30 K/BB ratio in 132 2/3 innings (20 starts) last season for the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan.

Davies did not yield a hit over those three innings and issued only one walk. They acquired him from the Padres back in late December as part of the return on the Yu Darvish trade.

Smith got torched for six earned runs in his two-inning Cactus League debut last Tuesday versus the Padres, so this was an encouraging bounceback effort. He issued one walk and did not allow a hit before giving way to Alex Young. Smith, 29, was acquired from the Marlins last August in the Starling Marte trade and should be a member of the season-opening starting rotation for the D-backs.

Logan Webb struck out three batters over two scoreless innings in a Cactus League start Monday versus the Diamondbacks.

Webb allowed a harmless two-out double to David Peralta in the top of the first inning and went 1-2-3 in the top of the second. The 24-year-old is trying to claim one of the final spots in the Giants' season-opening starting rotation and has now worked three scoreless frames with four strikeouts to open Cactus League play.

Kikuchi issued two walks and gave up a long third-inning solo homer to Yu Chang, but he touched 97 mph with his fastball and his slider/cutter sat around 91 mph. The added velocity has vaulted him back onto fantasy radars for 2021 despite an underwhelming 5.39 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 7.0 K/9 in 208 2/3 career major league frames. He's going late enough (Yahoo ADP: 249.0) to make for an intriguing end-of-draft dart throw.

Singer struggled with his command in a 30-pitch opening frame, hitting two batters and walking two, but he settled in from there and even struck out the side in the top of the third. The 24-year-old right-hander would appear to be locked into a spot in the Royals' season-opening starting rotation after posting an encouraging 4.06 ERA, 1.166 WHIP, and 61/23 K/BB ratio over his first 64 1/3 major league innings in 2020.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Monday that David Price is willing to fill "whatever role is best for the Dodgers in 2021."

Well, this is interesting. The expectation was that Price was lined up to be a starter after opting out of the 2020 season due to concerns over COVID-19. The plan still calls for him to get stretched out, but it's no longer certain that he'll actually start the year as a member of the rotation. Don't give up on Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May just yet in fantasy leagues.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Mets are interested in free agent infielder Maikel Franco.

This suggests that the Mets could have real concern about Jose Martinez's recent knee injury. Franco has yet to land with a new team despite slashing a decent .278/.321/.457 with eight homers across 243 plate appearances with the Royals last year. He could be a useful right-handed bat for someone.

Jose Alvarez said Monday that he required surgery on his groin after he was hit by a comebacker last August.

Alvarez suffered what was termed as a testicular contusion when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Lourdes Gurriel which had an exit velocity of 105.3 mph. Ouch. The good news is that he's feeling better and could be ready for Opening Day. Alvarez recently signed a one-year, $1.15 million deal with the Giants after appearing in eight games with the Phillies last year. The 31-year-old holds a quality 3.59 ERA in the majors.

Greiner was hit in the face by a 94 mph fastball from the Jays' Elvis Luciano during Sunday's Grapefruit League game. The good news is that there's no damage to the orbital bone and that no surgery will be required. The early expectation is that he'll be out about a week. He's likely to be Wilson Ramos' backup this season.
