According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres “remain engaged” in talks with free agent reliever Trevor Rosenthal.

Acee notes that the Padres final offer to bring back former closer Kirby Yates fell short of competing offers, so it’s unlikely they’ll be able to match the asking price for Rosenthal this offseason. There’s finally been some movement on the relief market after electrifying righty Liam Hendriks landed a three-year, $54 million free agent contract from the White Sox earlier this week. Yet, it doesn’t seem like the 30-year-old flame-throwing righty, who registered a microscopic 1.90 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 38/8 K/BB ratio across 23 2/3 innings with the Royals and Padres last season, is close to making a final decision.

Dominic Smith is making his Grapefruit League debut on Thursday versus the Nationals.

Smith missed the first couple of full-squad workouts in Mets camp for undisclosed reasons, so he's just a little behind their other position players, but there is no concern about his readiness for the start of the 2021 regular season. The 25-year-old slugger will DH on Thursday and could play left field as early as Saturday.

Gio Urshela (elbow) is set to make his Grapefruit League debut on Thursday.

He'll play third base and is expected to get two at-bats. Urshela had surgery back in December to remove bone chips from his right elbow, but he's already fully recovered and should be ready to rock on Opening Day. The 29-year-old third baseman looks like a great value right now in drafts with a Yahoo ADP of 180.1.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez revealed Thursday that Tanner Rainey entered camp this spring with a minor muscle strain near his collarbone.

Rainey was shut down for a bit at the start of camp but is now throwing again and still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day, per Martinez. The 28-year-old reliever posted a sharp 2.66 ERA, 0.738 WHIP, and 32/7 K/BB ratio over 20 1/3 innings in 2020 and projects for a prominent high-leverage role this season in Washington.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the "initial recommendation" for Framber Valdez is to undergo surgery on his fractured left ring finger.

Heyman adds that the "early belief" is the surgery would be season-ending, before the 2021 season even begins. Valdez and the Astros are getting a second opinion before committing to the next step. The 27-year-old left-hander fractured his finger Tuesday in a Grapefruit League game against the Mets when he went to field a Francisco Lindor groundball and put his throwing hand inside his glove. He had been rising up fantasy draft boards this spring coming off a 3.57 ERA, 1.118 WHIP, and 76/16 K/BB ratio over 70 2/3 innings in 2020.

Chris Archer (shoulder) threw another bullpen session Wednesday in Rays camp and could soon make his Grapefruit League debut.

Archer missed all of 2020 due to a shoulder/neck issue that was ultimately diagnosed as neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. He underwent surgery in June and is aiming to be ready for Opening Day with the Rays, who signed him to a one-year, $6.5 million free agent contract a couple weeks before the start of spring training.

Cain had been expected to make his Cactus League debut sometime this week, but the Brewers might hold off on that just to make sure the quad issue doesn't get any worse. He now projects to open as Milwaukee's primary right fielder after the club agreed to a contract with Jackie Bradley Jr. on Thursday morning.

Hoskins will DH and bat second in the afternoon tilt against the Yankees. He underwent an internal brace repair on the UCL in his left elbow back in October and has been brought along slowly this spring in Phillies camp, but it looks for now like the 27-year-old slugger is tracking toward being 100 percent come Opening Day. Hoskins slashed .245/.384/.503 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI over 41 games for Philadelphia in 2020.

Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe reports that the Brewers are in agreement on a two-year, $24 million contract with free agent outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.

The second year of the deal comes in the form of a player option, per McWilliams, so Bradley can essentially opt out and hit the free agent market again next winter if he's able to stage a big 2021 in Milwaukee. The 30-year-old attracted less interest than expected this offseason after registering a .283/.364/.450 batting line (.814 OPS) with seven home runs and five stolen bases over 55 games for the Red Sox in 2020 while playing his usual brand of high-level defense in center field. This addition will presumably push Lorenzo Cain to right field and Avisail Garcia into more of a platoon role. It may also be an indicator that Ryan Braun is indeed retiring.

Tejay Antone struck out five batters in two scoreless innings in a Cactus League game against the Dodgers on Wednesday night.

Antone got Chris Taylor and Max Muncy to strike out swinging in the third inning to start off his impressive showing. He followed that up by striking out the side in the fourth. Dodgers batters had a hard time catching up as Antone was reportedly touching 98 mph. He had a successful first season in the majors, posting a 2.80 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings in 2020. The versatile Antone could be a valuable bulk reliever with a chance to start, contributing in ratios and strikeouts for fantasy managers in 2021.

Julio Urias gave up one run on two hits and a walk in Wednesday night's Cactus League game against the Reds.

Urias threw 27 pitches and failed to record the third out before manager Dave Roberts elected to end the first inning. The run came off a ground-rule double by Alex Blandino that drove home Scott Heineman. It was Urias' first game action this spring after posting a 3.27 ERA in 10 starts for the Dodgers in 2020. Urias figures to make the starting rotation out of camp but with plenty of starting depth, Roberts has shown willingness to use Urias out of the bullpen when needed, bringing to question how many starts he'll ultimately make for the team in 2021.

Jeff Hoffman surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk in Wednesday night's Cactus League game against the Dodgers.

Hoffman got through a clean first inning against the Dodgers but ran into trouble in the second when he walked Matt Beaty and allowed a base hit to Gavin Lux to put two runners on base. Beaty then scored on a Zack McKinstry single and Lux followed shortly after on a sac fly by Luke Raley. Hoffman was acquired from Colorado for Robert Stephenson and is vying for a spot in the Reds' bullpen.
