Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford said there’s a chance Bryan Rust will be on the top power-play unit next season.

However, Rust is expected to face competition from off-season acquisition Kasperi Kapanen. They both provide the power play with a right-handed shot and could replace Patric Hornqvist, who was traded to Florida. "I like how they both can shoot the puck," Rutherford said. “And I like how they can dig pucks free, win puck battles. That’s the stuff that made Hornqvist so incredibly valuable on the power play. So if they get their chance with that group, I think they’ll be good because they’re both good at those kinds of things." Rust led the Penguins with eight power-play goals and tied for second on the team with 17 points on the man advantage last season, which suggests he could have the inside track on the position over Kapanen.

Jack Johnson has seemingly lost his spot Pittsburgh's defense corps following the acquisition of Mike Matheson.

"Dumoulin and Petterson are still young and aren’t going anywhere,” Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford said. “And obviously we like Matheson a great deal. He’ll play on the left side. So, that’s our left side. Those three. That’s it." Kris Letang, John Marino and Chad Ruhwedel are projected to occupy the right side on the team's blueline next season. "I like Jack," Rutherford added. "We’ll see what happens. He won’t be on the top three on the left side if we’re healthy." Johnson still has another three seasons left on his contract that carries a $3.25 million cap hit.

Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford has acknowledged that Matt Murray is the goaltender who is more likely to be traded.

"I’m just going to take it step by step through the process with them both being restricted free agents,” Rutherford said. “We’re in a similar spot right now that we were in with Fleury back in 2017. We wanted to keep him here. We truly did. But cap-wise, it just wasn’t going to work. We couldn’t do it. You get to that point with goaltenders sometimes. And look at the direction that Matt Murray’s salary is going in. It would be very hard to make it work. It’s a very, very similar situation." Murray and Tristan Jarry are pending RFAs and they will receive qualifying offers. Rutherford mentioned there is a possibility that Murray and Jarry will both be back next season, but he doesn't think that is a situation that "would work for everybody."

Oscar Klefbom could have surgery that has the possibility of him missing all of next season.

"If he does have surgery, maybe it decides that he is out for [the 2020-21 season]," Oilers GM Ken Holland said Thursday. "If we wouldn't have Oscar, it's a significant blow, and I don't have any real answers on that right now." The injury that Klefbom is dealing has not been disclosed and Edmonton is trying to figure out what to do this off-season if their top defender will be unavailable long-term. "What we do about it may depend on when the [2020-21] season starts," Holland added. "If it's December, it's not a good thing. If it's February, that's three extra months. There's a lot of unknown." The team hopes to know more about the situation soon.

The PR department of the Dallas Stars told the local media on Wednesday that the team's postseason availability will occur in about a week or so. We won't get confirmation on injury updates or the team's lengthy 'unfit to play' list until then, but there have been reports on Seguin's injuries. According to those, he was dealing with wrist, hip, groin and knee issues.

There have been several teams that have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the Coyotes blueliner. Carolina GM Don Waddell said there's no timetable on a new contract for Andrei Svechnikov.

Waddell stated that the goal is to keep Svechnikov "for a long time," but he thinks that a shorter bridge deal may be best way to go for now. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman recently reported that Carolina is willing to give Svechnikov an eight-year extension worth $7.5 million per year. However, Friedman added that Svechnikov's preference was for a shorter contract to land a bigger agreement down the road. The 20-year-old forward has one more season left on his entry-level contract.
