2023 Player Outlook

2023 Recap: Ross missed all of the 2022 and 2023 seasons, sans a few minor league innings last year, while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so to say he's a rather large question mark coming into the 2024 season is an understatement. When we last saw Ross in 2021, he posted a 4.17 ERA, 1.2 WHIP, and 23.7 percent strikeout rate across 108 IP for the Nationals. He generated a few more whiffs that year with an emphasis on becoming a sinker-slider type on the mound, but his struggles against left-handed hitters could be slightly problematic at American Family Field, a field notoriously friendly to left-handed power.

2024 Outlook: Ross has a chance to win a starting job in the team's rotation out of spring training, but even if he does, there's more questions than answers with him at the moment, and his leash will be relatively short. He likely operates as the team's fifth starter to begin the year, but we could see him make ample appearances as a reliever as well. There will be some rust to knock off, too, but an ERA in the mid-4s with around a strikeout per inning seems doable for Ross in 2024.
