Clayton Kershaw allowed just one run and struck out eight batters over six scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ World Series Game 1 win over the Rays on Tuesday.
Kershaw entered the Game 1 outing with a career 4.31 ERA in the postseason and a career 5.40 ERA in the World Series, but he bucked the narrative and turned in a start worthy of his overall Hall of Fame credentials. The only run against him came on a fifth-inning solo homer by Kevin Kiermaier, and he surrendered just one other hit (and one total walk) across his dominant and efficient 78-pitch performance. Kershaw induced a swing-and-miss rate of 50 percent (19 misses on 38 swings), the best of his career. And he probably could have tried for seven, eight, or perhaps even nine innings had the Dodgers not taken a comfortable 8-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. It was just the second of Kershaw's 29 career postseason starts in which the Dodgers’ offense delivered eight or more runs of support by the time of his departure. Oct 20 11:45 pm (EST)
