Giants re-signed C Chadwick Tromp to a one-year contract.

It's a guaranteed major league deal, which comes as a bit of a surprise given that the Giants just non-tendered Tromp last Wednesday. He could open the 2021 regular season as the backup to Buster Posey if the club decides to stick top catching prospect Joey Bart back in the minor leagues for a little more development time. Tromp, 25, slugged four home runs in 24 games (64 plate appearances) this past year for San Francisco, though he ultimately finished with a weak .213 batting average and .219 on-base percentage. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Reds are among the "many teams" showing interest in free agent shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

Cincinnati definitely has a need at shortstop and Simmons would be a huge addition defensively. The 31-year-old slashed .297/.346/.356 with zero home runs and two stolen bases over 30 games (127 plate appearances) last summer for the Angels before opting out in September because of concerns about COVID-19.

Nationals signed INF/OF Hernan Perez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Perez was with the Cubs in 2020 but appeared in only three major league games. The versatile 29-year-old holds a career .252/.281/.386 batting line in 1,825 total plate appearances at the big league level.

According to FanSided's Robert Murray, the Braves are "circling" on free agent catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Murray adds that "other teams on the west coast" are also expressing interest. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported Wednesday that the Phillies are "believed" to have an offer on the table to Realmuto worth upwards of $110 million, but the 29-year-old catcher is probably aiming a little higher than that after watching 31-year-old outfielder George Springer sign a six-year, $150 million contract with the Blue Jays on Tuesday. Travis d'Arnaud currently projects as the starting catcher in Atlanta for 2021, coming off a terrific showing in 2020.

Miles Mikolas (elbow) has resumed throwing off a mound.

Mikolas sat out all of 2020 due to a flexor tendon strain that eventually required surgery, but he expects to be fully ready for the start of spring training and wants to go 170-200 innings in 2021. "My arm feels good — I actually had a nice bullpen (session) today, my second bullpen," the 32-year-old right-hander told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Wednesday. "Just a light, almost what you’d call touch-and-feel to kind of get back into the rhythm. But my rhythm was good. I was hitting spots, I was keeping the ball down."

Morosi notes the connection between Gonzalez and new Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, as they spent many years together in Houston. The versatile 31-year-old is also said to be in contact with the Twins about a possible reunion despite slashing just .211/.286/.320 over 199 plate appearances for Minnesota in 2020.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Jake Kaplan of The Athletic, the Astros have signed free agent catcher Jason Castro.

Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle passes along word that it's a two-year agreement, and USA Today's Bob Nightengale hears that it will come with $7 million in total guaranteed money. Castro was selected 10th overall by the Astros in the 2008 MLB Draft and spent the first seven years (2010-2016) of his big league career in Houston, so this will be a reunion of sorts. He had also been connected to the Cubs, Rangers, and Tigers this winter. The 33-year-old stumbled to a .188/.293/.375 batting line over 27 games between the Angels and Padres in 2020, but he had a good showing offensively with the Twins in 2019 and should be a fine left-handed-hitting complement to the right-handed-hitting Martin Maldonado for the 'Stros in 2021.

Ryan Dull has agreed to a deal with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the independent American Association.

Dull was with the Blue Jays organization on a minor league contract in 2020 but did not make the team's 60-man player pool when the MLB season finally got underway. The now 31-year-old right-hander surrendered 19 runs -- 18 earned -- over 12 2/3 innings of relief between the Athletics, Yankees, and Jays in 2019.

Dermody re-signed with the Cubs on a minor league deal last month, but Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors says the lefty is now headed to Japan to play for the Seibu Lions. The 30-year-old holds a 5.13 ERA over 29 appearances across parts of three major league seasons.
