Rodriguez, 29, spent the 2020 season playing for the Orix Buffaloes in Japan where he slashed .242/.299/.445 with 13 homers, 41 RBI and a 74/20 K/BB ratio across 83 games. He played exclusively at first base in 2020, but also has experience at third base and the corner outfield as well. He'll add organizational depth for the Tigers. Jan 16 1:39 pm (EST)

Chris Paddack will take the bump for the Padres on Saturday, piggybacked by Adrian Morejon, and Joe Musgrove will debut on Friday night. Darvish is currently going as the sixth overall starting pitcher off the board in the average Yahoo draft -- overall ADP: 20.7 -- after registering a 2.01 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 93/14 K/BB ratio across 76 innings (12 starts) last season for the Cubs. The 34-year-old right-hander boasts a 2.52 ERA with 217 strikeouts and only 21 walks over his last 164 1/3 innings dating back to the middle of 2019.

Bryan Baker has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his right elbow.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins told reporters on Thursday morning that the injury may involve the ulnar collateral ligament, but the hope is that a conservative treatment plan will prove successful in healing it. Baker, 26, probably won't be ready for the beginning of the regular season either way.

Nate Pearson has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his right groin.

Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins revealed that news Thursday morning in camp but declined to speculate on a timetable for Pearson's return to live action. "We will be cautious and make sure the pain is completely gone," Atkins told reporters via Zoom. The talented 24-year-old made his Grapefruit League debut on Monday afternoon against the Pirates and allowed one unearned run over one inning of work. Groin strains are usually multi-week injuries, so Pearson would seem doubtful to be fully ready for Opening Day.

Richie Martin (hand) could get into Grapefruit League games sometime next week.

Martin needed surgery in January for a broken hamate bone in his left hand and is a bit behind the other players in Orioles camp, but he's taken some rounds of live batting practice without issue and should be ready by Opening Day. Still, he's probably going to be ticketed for the alternate training site once camp breaks.

Luis Torrens (finger) is expected to make his Cactus League debut this weekend.

Torrens cut his finger in the weight room a couple of weeks ago, but he's been making steady progress on the side in Mariners camp and should be fully ready for the opening of the 2021 regular season. The young catcher currently projects to share time behind the plate with Tom Murphy this year in Seattle.

Red Sox 1B/3B prospect Triston Casas is back in Boston for a non-baseball medical situation, per manager Alex Cora.

Cora declined to get into details on the matter. Casas was the 26th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft out of a high school in Florida and posted an .830 OPS with 20 home runs in 120 games between Low-A Greenville and High-A Salem in 2019. He spent part of the 2020 season at the Red Sox's alternate training site.

Smith missed the first couple of full-squad workouts in Mets camp for undisclosed reasons, so he's just a little behind their other position players, but there is no concern about his readiness for the start of the 2021 regular season. The 25-year-old slugger will DH on Thursday and could play left field as early as Saturday.
