Game Play Predictions

New York Mets

  • Hyun-Jin Ryu has quietly been great for the Dodgers this season, going 4-1 with a 2.24 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 52.1 innings across 10 starts.
  • Ryu’s 10.15 K/9 is the highest of his career, surpassing his previous career-high of 8.24 in 2017.
  • Ryu’s 2.06 BB/9 is his lowest since 2014.
  • Ryu has made four starts since returning from a groin injury August 15. He had a 2.38 ERA in those four starts, with 23 strikeouts and just two walks.
  • Ryu has been significantly better at Dodgers Stadium in his career, with a 3.02 ERA at home and a 3.57 ERA on the road.
  • Ryu has always generated a lot of ground balls, but his 50.8 percent ground ball rate would be a new career high, up from his career mark of 48.3 percent.
  • Current Mets are batting 7-for-45 against Hyun-Jin Ryu .
  • Amed Rosario is 14-for-32 with three stolen bases during his seven-game hitting streak.
  • Brandon Nimmo has been relatively hot as well, going 7-for-18 over the last seven days.
  • The Mets have a .648 OPS against lefties this season, the worst mark in baseball. They have a respectable 8.8 percent walk rate against southpaws, but the Mets’ 24.8 percent strikeout rate against lefties is second only to the White Sox.
  • The Mets have surprisingly been one of the better-hitting teams on the road this season. Their .760 road OPS ranks sixth.
  • Todd Frazier has a .552 OPS against lefties this season, sixth worst among qualified hitters.
  • Wilmer Flores hasn’t been much better at .606.

Los Angeles Dodgers

  • Much like his opponent in this game, Zack Wheeler has been very good this season despite very little fanfare. Wheeler is 6-1 with a 1.19 ERA in 53 innings across eight starts since the All-Star Break, with 53 strikeouts and just 10 walks.
  • Wheeler’s 7.6 percent walk rate is the lowest of his career, as is his 0.67 HR/9.
  • Wheeler has a 44.5 percent ground ball rate this season, down from his 48.0 percent career mark.
  • Cody Bellinger is 3-for-5 with three home runs and eight RBI against Zack Wheeler .
  • The Dodgers will be without Yasiel Puig , who is serving the second game of his two-game suspension Thursday.
  • The Dodgers might not actually miss Puig much, as he is one of several Dodgers who have struggled lately. Yasmani Grandal is 2-for-15 with eight strikeouts over the last week.
  • Brian Dozer is 1-for-22 over the last seven days.
  • Joc Pederson has just two strikeouts over the last week, but he has still managed just three hits in 11 at-bats. Max Muncy has been even worse, going 1-for-11 over the same span.
  • The Dodgers have a .296 OBP over the last week, good for 19th in MLB. The Dodgers rank 12th with a .745 OPS at home.
  • Only the Red Sox have a better OPS against righties than the Dodgers’ .782 mark.
  • The Dodgers’ 9.9 percent walk rate against righties is the best in baseball, and their 22.4 percent strikeout rate against righties ranks 13th.

Pre-Game Props

  1. Either team scores in the 1st Inning.

No. The payout for yes is kind of ridiculous, but this matchup features two good pitchers and one terrible offense, as the over/under reflects. If you pick Yes and win, you will have a huge advantage over everyone else, but it just seems extremely unlikely.

  1. Either team has a 3 up, 3 down inning.

YES. Given the Mets’ struggles against lefties, I think they are a pretty good candidate to go down in order. Yes pays out three times, which certainly doesn’t help.

  1. A NYM batter reaches base in the 1st Inning.

NO. Again, I’m passing out a nice payout, but if you pick Yes for Question 2, you pretty much have to pick No for question three. It is possible the Dodgers go down in order and the Mets reach safely, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

  1. NYM leadoff batter sees 6 or more pitches.

NO. Hyun-Jin Ryu is averaging 3.88 pitches per plate appearance this season and 3.90 P/PA for his career. Amed Rosario is averaging 3.67 P/PA in his career. Even though the payout isn’t great, I am strongly considering using my One Shot on this prop. It feels like free money.
