You know that I’m the first to admit when it was a rough week and last week was one of those weeks.  The top of the playbook was solid with Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Abraham Ancer, Paul Casey and Gary Woodland.  I am really happy that my one and done Woodland didn’t disappoint with a Top 20 finish.  Way better than last year’s pick of Byeong Hun An who of course finished Top 10 this year just to get under my skin.  The value plays is where things really went bad and that’s where the money is typically made.  It is time to bounce back in sunny San Diego at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Torrey Pines is a 36-hole municipal public golf facility owned by the city of San Diego, California.  It sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the community of La Jolla, just south of Torrey Pines State Reserve.  It hosted the 2008 U.S. Open which was the last time Tiger Woods won a Major Championship before his 2019 Masters victory.  It is schedule to host this year’s U.S. Open in June on the South Course.

Speaking of Tigers Woods, he will not tee it up this weekend as he is recovering from back surgery he had back in late December.  He has also won on this track a record eight times, seven of which came at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Back to the Farmers Insurance, this tournament is played over two courses.  The players will play each the North and South courses on Thursday and Friday but then play the last 36-holes over the weekend on the tougher South course. The North course is the easier course and measures out to only 7,258 yards and is a Par 72. If you are playing the showdowns, make sure you stack your golfers playing on that course.  The South course is consistently ranked as one of the toughest tracks on tour and stretches out 7,765 yards.  These players must take advantage of the short North course to make the weekend.  Length will be at a premium this week, you won’t see too many players in my playbook who can’t crack 300 off the tee on a regular basis.  The South course ranks inside the Top 15 toughest in Fairways Hit, Greens in Regulation, Proximity and Scrambling.  That’s why all of those stats will be in my key stats of the weekend because if you can do those things, you’ll be on the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.  I’ll substitute Strokes Gained: Approach for Proximity.  I’ll also add Strokes Gained: Putting as these greens are poa annua which means no putt is safe, no matter the distance but some players thrive on them.  Also Torrey features a lot of long Par 4s and so I'll look at Par 4 Efficiency 450-500 yards.

My One and Done Pick will be Ryan Palmer.

Good Luck this Weekend.
