DFS PGA Playbook - ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD
Drew Phelps explores every Fairway, reads every Green and uses his DFS Golf experience to put together a winning DFS Playbook for the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD.
What a week at Shadow Creek! I hope you got a chance to see this beautiful course and how it really is an oasis in the middle of the Nevadan desert. While I didn’t have Jason Kokrak in my playbook last week, I feel really good for a grinder like him to get his first PGA Tour victory. That driver proved to be quite a weapon at Shadow Creek. He shot a closing round 64 to take down the CJ CUP. I know I would have liked better results last weekend but that’s the beautiful part of the PGA Tour season, we’ve got another event this weekend in Thousand Oaks, California.
Typically the PGA Tour would have continued the Asian swing of the schedule in Japan but because of the pandemic, changes had to be made once again. The inaugural ZOZO Championship was played last year at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club and Tiger Woods took home his record tying 82nd PGA Tour victory. This year we will see 78 players tee it up at Sherwood Country Club. That means once again we’ve got a stacked field playing without a cut.
Sherwood is a private course about 45 minutes (depending on traffic) from downtown Los Angeles designed by Jack Nicklaus. The last time the PGA Tour stopped at Sherwood was back in 2013 for what was then called the Chevron World Challenge but now called the Hero. The course is only 7,100 yards but it is not a standard par 72. There are five par 5s and five par 3s on this course and the longest hole is only 580 yards which leads me to believe that we should see a lot of low numbers this weekend. The elevation changes and the speed of these greens will be the course’s main defense against these players. The fairways are lined with trees but the longer hitters will have an obvious advantage to clear past the trees and have short irons into the greens. Now, length is not the be all end all, if you look at the course history we’ve seen shorter hitters on the PGA Tour have success as well. You don’t have to stack your lineups with bombers because it’s a short track.
The weather should be great this week with temps in the high 60s but the players getting out in the early morning could see temps in the low 50s. The winds look to be relatively tame
TOP NEWS: Dustin Johnson has pulled out of this event after testing positive for COVID-19 before last week’s CJ CUP. Tony Finau returns to action this weekend after his COVID-19 diagnosis.
