The FedEx Cup Playoffs begins and what better place to start than New York City. The Northern Trust heads to Liberty National for the third time. It also hosted the Presidents Cup in 2017. Of the 24 golfers who competed in it, 20 are in this week's field, but 10 didn't play it in 2009 or 2013 for the Northern Trust. Those 10 will have a disadvantage because the course is set up closer to how it was in 2013 than for the Presidents Cup. While you see the beautiful New York City skyline from the course, it is actually located in Jersey City, New Jersey. The course stretches out to 7,370 yards and plays as a par 71. Keeping the ball on the fairway is always a good thing but when the rough was shortened a bit from the 2009 edition, that put more of a premium on greens in regulation. Of the 12 golfers who finished inside the Top 10 on the 2013 leaderboard, 10 ranked inside the Top 20 in GIR, including champion Adam Scott. 49 from the 2013 field are committed, 26 of whom also competed here in 2009. Overall, 29 qualifier from the 2009 edition are here. The Northern Trust is also the last cut line of the 2018-2019 PGA Tour season after 36 holes. We've got bentgrass blanketing the tightest lies and the greens, which could exceed 12 feet on the stimpmeter. The rough is bluegrass. As of when I started writing this article, Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson, Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Sam Burns are the only four qualifiers who are not committed to playing this week. Stenson and Burns cannot advance due to being outside the Top 70 but Rafa and Casey should both be able to play at the BMW next weekend.
The players are in for a real treat when it comes to the weather this weekend. Besides a minor threat of rain on Thursday, we've got a beautiful forecast with sunshine and daytime highs in the 80s. You will see wind gusts throughout the weekend, just given the location. You should be able to play whomever you would like and not have to worry about start times.
