The FedEx Cup Playoffs begin its 12th edition on an old favorite for the Northern Trust.  Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey has hosted this tournament three times before and what makes this course unique is that it’s spread out over three nine hole tracks.  It is a Par 71 with three par 5s and features slightly different routing than what qualifiers in 2008, 2010, and 2014 experienced.

This course will reward those who can find balance between aggression and patience.  The course stretches out 7,385 yards and boasts a stem trio of par 5s but overall, the composite course plays into the grips of ball-strikers and shot-sharpers who also know how to convert on their scoring opportunities which means putting.

2014 was the last time Ridgewood hosted the Northern Trust and it showed to have pretty average fairways hit (63%), greens in regulation (64%) and par breaker conversion rate after hitting GIR (29%).  In 2008, the scoring average was 71.4 but decreased each of the last two trips to 70.9 in 2010 and 70.8 in 2014. Hunter Mahan won the event back in 2014 and he led the field in greens hit with 58. When you look at the Top 12 from that event, seven of them ranked inside the Top 10 in strokes gained:putting.  Patrick Reed had the worst SG:Putting of the players in the Top 12.

Finally, the greens are bentgrass and they are average in size and will run about 12 on the stimpmeter.  That means that the primary defense come from around the edges where the rough is as high as four inches.  Players really must hit greens.

It looks like mother nature will cooperate this weekend as the conditions are expected to be dry throughout with daytime highs in the low to mid-80s with light breezes.

This field will feature 120 golfers battling for a chance to advance in the playoffs.  It should be a fun few weeks as these guys chase down that huge 10 million dollar prize
