Don't forget to play Majors Challenge Fantasy Golf for The Open Championship
Who doesn’t love a Major Week?!? There’s just something in the air, maybe that’s just the sweet smell of a million dollars up for grabs on DraftKings. We’ve got an abundance of storylines heading into The 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland. From Rickie Fowler still trying to win that first major championship to Jordan Spieth, the defending Open Champion struggling throughout the 2018 season with his once reliable putter. The U.S. Open will be a tough act to follow but the course known as Car-NASTY among tour pros is definitely up for the challenge.
The one thing that comes to every golf fan’s mind when they think of Carnoustie is back in 1999 when we all painfully watched Jean Van de Velde’s epic meltdown on the final hole. That year, the best score at the end of regulation was a whopping 6 over par, and yes, you read that correctly. When Padraig Harrington beat out Sergio Garcia in a playoff back in 2007, their scores were 7 under par after regulation which is a bit more respectable. Those are the type of scores we should expect this weekend from these current pros but remember, there are very few on tour right now which experience on this amazing track.
Now, lets take a closer look at the course. It plays at just over 7,400 yards with just two par 5s but it is as dry as it’s ever been. That means it’s going to play long with bunkers placed in just the right positions to make club selection as a premium this week. There are only three par 3s which gives the bombers an advantage this week.
When we look back at when Harrington took home the Claret Jug in 2007, he landed 37 of the 60 fairways which put him at T37 in the field and 47 greens in regulation which placed him T12 but he led the field in scrambling in going 19-for-25. You’ll see a lot of low liner shots to keep the ball out of the winds of Scotland.
You will see me mention the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in my playbook. This is a tournament on the European tour is played over three Scottish courses including Carnoustie. A lot of these regulars on the European tour have got more experience on the Scottish links which will be a point of emphasis this week.
