DFS PGA PLAYBOOK - FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN
Drew Phelps explores every Fairway, reads every Green and uses his DFS Golf experience to put together a winning playbook for the Farmers Insurance Open.
Hello from the F.S.T.A. Winter Conference in Los Angeles. I’m meeting and getting to know some of the biggest and brightest minds in the industry and it’s been a real thrill. Congrats to the Fantasy Alarm’s own Jim Bowden and Howard Bender for taking home the Best Radio Show of the Year Award. Those two worked so hard to put together a great program every day on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio. It was honor to be here to see it in person.
Ok, onto the Farmers insurance Open at Torrey Pines. This venue features a 36-hole municipal public golf facility owned by the city of San Diego, California. It sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the community of La Jolla, just south of Torrey Pines State Reserve. It hosted the 2008 U.S. Open which was the last time Tiger Woods won a Major Championship.
And speaking of Tiger Woods … HE’S BACK! That’s right, the man himself will be teeing it up this week and everyone can’t wait to see how he performs. Tiger knows how to pick his events because he basically grew up on this course. He has also won on this track a record seven times, six of which came at the Farmers Insurance Open. You will not see him in my playbook because I'm not interested in owning him at that price tag on DraftKings. I would consider using him on Fanduel but not enough to put him in my playbook. He is just too much of a wild card this weekend but if you want to throw him into a GPP, go for it but I’ll be fading and just watching to see how he looks.
You also won't see Phil in my playbook either. He does love Torrey Pines with three titles under his belt but Phil hasn't had much success recently. Just made two cuts (T14 in 2017 & T51 in 2013) in his last six trips. He also failed to make the cut at the CareerBuilder last week. Now, for these same reasons, he could be an intriguing play in GPPs because his ownership will be depressed. I may throw him into a GPP or two but overall I’m avoiding him.
Back to the Farmers Insurance, this tournament is played over two courses. The players will play Torrey Pines (North) on Thursday and Friday and Torrey Pines (South) over the weekend. The North course measures out to only 7,258 yards and is a Par 72. The South course is consistently ranked in the top five toughest course on tour and stretches out 7,698 yards. These players must take advantage of the short North course to make the weekend. All players will miss fairways this week, so you can play your bombers. You should be targeting players who hit greens especially from the rough. I’ll also be targeting players with good proximity numbers as well. The greens are poa annua which basically means that no putt is safe, no matter the distance but some players thrive on them.
Good luck this weekend
