The Waste Management Open is a terrific event and once again it did not disappoint.  How do you not love Arizona State grad Jon Rahm putting on an ASU Pat Tillman uniform on the 16th Hole?  I loved seeing Phil Mickelson get huge ovations from the crowd every time he teed up on 16.  It was a pretty great week overall for the playbook besides Brendan Steele inability to make any kind of charge over the weekend.  Hideki Matsuyama just owns TPC Scottsdale and fading him is just not an option.  Let’s keep the good times rolling into Pebble Beach.

The Pebble Beach Pro-Am is another one of those special events where the tournament is played over three different courses and there is no cut until after the third round.  I’ve said this repeatedly but when you get an extra round from all your golfers, you can afford to take more risk in your lineups.  It lends you to playing more of a stars and scrubs lineup.

Let’s talk about the courses.  We’ve got Pebble Beach Golf Links (Par 72 – 6,816 yards), Monterey Peninsula (Par 71 – 6,838 yards) and Spyglass Hill (Par 72 – 6,858 yards).  You’ll notice that these courses are rather short and these players can low but that is almost completely weather dependent.  Per reports, there is a fierce weather system expected to impact Thursday and Friday.  Rain and wind will lift scores before more favorable conditions take over on the weekend.  Knowing the weather report for the weekend, I will lean toward more experienced players as they have played in these conditions before.

There are two type of players you can target this weekend.  I want either a bomber with good total driving numbers and can hit wedges from the rough (Phil Mickelson) or I want a course manager who can play the wind (Justin Rose).  If there was no wind in the forecast, you’d have players hitting lots of fairways and greens but that does not seem to be the case for this weekend, at least the first two days.  As there is wind in the forecast, we will have a lot of missed greens which is why scrambling and play from the rough is vital to success.

The hardest part of setting lineups for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am is that there are a lot of top priced players with great track records.  Spieth, DJ, Day, Snedeker, Mickelson, Rose, Walker, & Holmes all have terrific resumes at Pebble which makes it hard to determine a core.  Everyone will have their own personal choices and I’ve given mine below in the playbook.  The guys I have listed will be in my core but I may throw Day or Walker in a GPP as well.  My lineups will be overweight with Dustin & Justin this weekend.

Finally, let’s say hey to Paige!  She attended the Waste Management Open as we all should have been because it is a blast.  Pebble Beach is one of the great public venues in the United States and always a fun weekend of golf.  There are not many golf hacks out there that wouldn’t give a full pay check for a chance to play this track, myself being one of them.
