Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports that the Mets "continue to be engaged" on free agent starter Trevor Bauer.

Martino adds that an agreement is not close and other clubs are involved. Still, the Mets' interest appears to be real. Signing Bauer could push the Mets up against the $210 million luxury tax threshold, but that might not be much of a setback for new owner Steve Cohen. After all, it has been treated as a salary cap by MLB teams when in reality it's not that at all. The question is whether the Mets feel adding a talented pitcher like Bauer would be worth the public blowback when they could spend their cash to add a center fielder, a reliever, and an extra infielder, fitting with their needs. Red Sox acquired RHP Frank German from the Yankees in the Adam Ottavino trade.

Ottavino is the big name here, but given Boston will pay most of the money left on his deal, odds are they wouldn't have done this one without landing an interesting prospect. German, 23, was a fourth-round pick of the Yankees in 2018 and holds a 3.56 ERA with 128 strikeouts and 44 walks over his first 111 1/3 innings in pro ball. He throws hard, but he'll have to make progress with his control to avoid a move to the bullpen.

Red Sox acquired RHPs Adam Ottavino and Frank German and cash considerations from the Yankees for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

It's a pure cash-dump for the Yankees, who are looking to stay under the $210 luxury tax threshold while adding some other pieces. Brett Gardner is one possibility. Ottavino is still owed $8 million this season and a $3 million signing bonus which is deferred to 2022, but Boston will cover most of that. According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Yankees are paying just $850,00 as part of the trade. As for the Red Sox, they managed to buy a prospect as well as a pitcher who is capable of a rebound. Ottavino could very well be saving games for Boston this season. And if he bounces back, he could be an interesting trade chip in the final year of his deal.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Dodgers "remain optimistic" they can re-sign third baseman Justin Turner.

The Dodgers have been mentioned throughout, but Heyman writes that they'd prefer a two-year deal while Turner wants more in what could be his final major contract. One report earlier this month suggested he wants a four-year deal, which sounds like a stretch for a 36-year-old. Heyman writes that Turner has four possibilities at the moment, including the Blue Jays.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Red Sox are still interested in free agent outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.

The Red Sox have kept Bradley on their radar, but they've only recently become aggressive in regard to player movement. Odds are his market will accelerate in the coming days. Bradley has also been connected to the Mets, Phillies, and Astros.

Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports that the Red Sox are acquiring Adam Ottavino from the Yankees.

Yes, the rare Yankees/Red Sox trade. It appears the main motivation for the Yankees was freeing up the cash, as Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Red Sox are set to pick up most of what's owed to Ottavino ($8 million in 2021, $3 million deferred) for the remainder of his deal. Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Yankees are kicking in $850,000. Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, New York will also send prospect right-hander Frank German to Boston, so the Red Sox are essentially buying a prospect while buying low on a reliever. Ottavino, 35, posted a rough 5.89 ERA over 24 relief appearances in 2020, but he's obviously capable of better. According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, the Yankees will receive a player to be named later or cash considerations in return.

Howard Eskin of 94 WIP and Fox 29 TV reports that the Phillies are interested in free agent shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network confirms the report and adds that the Blue Jays and Reds are also interested. According to Eskin, the Phillies are looking to add someone on a one-year deal. Of course, Didi Gregorius is still out there, as well as Marcus Semien. Among the three available shortstop, Simmons might be the most likely to be amenable to a one-year deal in hopes of recouping his value. The 31-year-old slashed .297/.346/.356 across 127 plate appearances last season with the Angels before opting out in September due to COVID-19 concerns.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that free agent left-hander Tony Cingrani will throw for teams on February 1.

Cingrani failed to latch on with a team last year after requiring labrum surgery in 2019. The 31-year-old last pitched for the Dodgers in 2018, posting a 4.76 ERA with 36 strikeouts and six walks in 22 2/3 relief innings. He might have to settle for a spring training invite somewhere.
