It feels very strange that we are this late in the NASCAR season and yet this will be the first time the Cup cars venture to the capital of Virginia for a race. Typically the Action Track, as it’s known, hosts two Cup races a year but due to the schedule crunch with Covid, it lost one of those dates this year. That’s significant because there aren’t any notes for the drivers this year for this track like they had at Darlington last week and yet this is a playoff race.
Richmond is a three-quarter of a mile short track with relatively flat banking and it’s in a tri-oval configuration meaning the front stretch is curved as well. So that means that passing here gets interesting to try and pull off as the cars aren’t going in a straight line much around the short track. Speaking to that is the fact that the last five races have seen an average of five drivers move up double-digit spots in each race.
The race number is the number of laps this week so be prepared for laps led to be a key stat this week as it typically is with every short track race.
Toyota has been a dominant manufacturer here at Richmond as not only have they posted the above winning percentage in the last 10 races but they’ve also won the last four races in a row.

Core Drivers By Tier
Tier 1 - Martin Truex Jr.
Truex has flat out owned RIchmond of late with two wins last year and he’s been near unbeatable at short tracks as well
The dominator points are in his favor as he leads the field in them over the last four races here
He nearly won the Southern 500 last week and has eight straight top-five finishes this season
Tier 2 - Jimmie Johnson
Johnson has continued to do well at RIchmond the last few years with three top-10s in the last four races.
He’s also moved up through the field well here in that span with an 11.2 PD mark.
Johnson has the fifth-best average finish in the last five races this season in the field.
Tier 3 - Austin Dillon
Dillon was one lap shy of winning the Southern 500 last weekend
He’s posted two top-10s in the last four races here while moving up 5.5 spots a race
While last weekend solidified his playoff standing, a win gives him an even bigger buffer
Contrarian Play - Clint Bowyer
Bowyer’s best track is coming next weekend and so people might be looking past him this weekend.
Richmond has been good for him with four top-10s in the last four races,
His positive 7.0 PD mark is one of the tops in the field.
Fade - Ryan Blaney
Don’t mean to pile on Blaney but this just hasn’t been a good track for him
Last year he started P15 and P22 and finished P18 and P25 respectively and averages moving back 7.5 spots a race.
At this price point on both sites, it’s hard to swallow the fact that he’s not cracked 2x value over the last five races here.
