This weekend was supposed to be the race at Watkins Glen, one of the best road courses in the world, but instead we get the untested, at the NASCAR level, Daytona Road Course. Even at 14 turns and 3.61 miles, this is expected to be one of the faster road courses raced on any of the NASCAR circuits and based on watching some of the drivers practice on iRacing over the last few days, it’s going to be a genuine challenge as well.

There are 65 scheduled laps for the race over three stages of 15, 15, and 35 and we expect there to be a competition caution in the middle of the first stage. Remember that with this being the first time they’re running this track and this specific package here, and potentially rain tires, there could be quite a few laps run under yellow which get you some cheap laps led points, however, in general, there aren’t really that many dominator points in this race.

I haven’t included the average points by position charts here because this is a new track and other road courses don’t really translate to this one in terms of scoring. Typically speaking though, drivers that start in the top-10 at road courses usually are the ones that wind up winning and in six of the last seven road races the driver that has led the most laps is also the one that has won the race. Place differential and finish position are the two main stats we’re focused on this week for building the lineups.
