The Lady In Black. The Track Too Tough To Tame. Darlington Stripes. All phrases you'd better get used to hearing a lot this weekend as the Cup schedule makes its annual trip to one of the most beloved, and classic, tracks in racing. Located in Darlington, South Carolina, and opened 69 years ago, it’s described as “A NASCAR Tradition” and it’s once-a-year race has become a great spot for the flashback weekend that this year highlights the 1990s, from the paint schemes on the cars to the fire suit fashions, and just for good measure, the track surface has taken a trip back to the ‘90s as well.
Not only do the nicknames set it apart from most other tracks, but the layout and distance and the challenges those wreak havoc on teams, drivers, and cars alike more than almost any other track on the schedule. So why is it so tough, too tough in fact? Well, the shape of the track for one; it’s an egg-shaped oval that has a wider radius in Turns 1 & 2 and a much tighter radius in Turns 3 & 4. The second thing that wreaks havoc is the length of Darlington at 1.36 miles per lap. It’s a touch shorter than your standard intermediate track that’s 1.5 miles in length and that can throw you off as a driver in terms of passing time and pacing laps. Lastly, the track surface itself is impressively tough on tires. In fact, the teams will have the most sets of tires for a race this season, on Sunday night, with 14 sets for the 367-lap race. That means they only have to average 25 laps per set to make it to the end. The surface is very similar to that of Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The race is 500 miles in length and 367 laps in length and with how rough the surface is and the concentration it takes to manage the two different sized corners, it’s a mentally and physically draining race that also starts in the daylight and ends under the lights. The Southern 500 is using the 550-horsepower package without aero ducts, the same package run at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier in the year.

An impressive 70-of-115 winners at Darlington have come from the top-five starting spots with 20 winners starting on the Pole. The last one to pull off that feat was in 2014, which was also the last time the race was held in April instead of Labor Day weekend.
