Best Lap Average

Items of Note:

  • Denny Hamlin was way too free in the first session and they are trying to tighten it up in the second session.
  • Chase Elliott was really loose and was able to run in a pack but they don’t know what broke the splitter but they replaced it between sessions.
  • Jimmie Johnson is working on long-run speed in this session since long-run speed will be king on Saturday night.
  • Clint Bowyer and the 14-car crew is also making a bunch of adjustments on the car in between sessions just like a lot of cars are despite him showing good speed in the first practice.
  • Brad Keselowski and a few others are making mock qualifying runs at the start of practice to see how the cars get up to speed since there is just one timed lap in qualifying on Friday night.
  • Martin Truex Jr. is slower in the opening laps of final practice than at the end of opening practice so they will have to make adjustments to the 19-car throughout this session after already making adjustments in between the sessions.
  • Several cars are drafting around the track five minutes into the practice as they try to see how this package works around this track. Erik Jones, Chase Elliott, and Joey Logano are in the pack and they went three-wide at times.
  • Erik Jones is feeling some confidence from this P6 finish at Dover and has a good history at Kansas from 2018. He wants the car to be tightened up in this session as he’s too loose to run in a pack successfully.
  • Alex Bowman has been on a long-run in this session and late in the run he was still able to pass big name drivers like Kyle Busch. He went out at the drop of the green flag and hasn’t been back to the garage once during the first 20 minutes of the session.
  • Slide jobs will be a popular move to pass off the corners this weekend as the lower line can carry quite a bit of speed with this package.
  • SHR cars continue to show good speed in the second practice as well with Harvick at the top of the 10-lap average halfway through and the best single-lap run as well.
  • Ryan Blaney tried a few different things in the first practice but felt that they really hit on a specific thing for the final practice and they’ve just been tweaking the suspension mainly in the final practice.
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr. seems to have a stable car through the corners and is able to make it through on the bottom without really getting out of the throttle.
  • With 22 minutes left in the session the top 29 cars are within .3 seconds of each other in lap times.
  • The JGR cars are possibly the stiffest cars on the track but now a couple of the drivers are complaining of bottoming out in the middle of the corners.
  • With 8:30 left in the practice, Alex Bowman brushed the wall with the right side of the car but it doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of damage to the car. He was on a seven-lap run and had been complaining of loose entry right as the car stepped out entering the corner.
  • Another couple of drafting packs have broken out late in the session as they continue to feel out the aerodynamics in the new package on the track.
  • Kyle Larson got really loose entering the corner and kept it off the wall and avoided hitting Martin Truex Jr. as well. The tires were flat spotted but with five minutes left that’s not a major concern.
  • Kurt Busch is top-five in five lap, 10-lap, and 15-lap averages while Kevin Harvick is tops in all of those metrics at final practice.

Best Lap Averages

Items of Note:

  • With less than five minutes elapsed in practiced, 32 cars have already run at least one lap on the track with Aric Almirola running the fastest lap to this point.
  • There is very little difference between the top-24 cars in this session with all of them within .4 seconds of each other.
  • Many drivers are doing mock qualifying runs in this practice at the beginning of the session.
  • Martin Truex Jr. has made multiple runs and made adjustments to the car each time but still hasn’t found the speed he wants in it.
  • 20 minutes into the session, Fords are top-four on the speed chart with three SHR cars taking the top-three spots.
  • Ryan Blaney said his car was free early in the practice but they made adjustments to the car and he jumped from 15th on the speed chart to 4th on the speed chart.
  • Brad Keselowski jumped from the 20s to the top of the chart in his third run of the day with about 30 minutes elapsed in the session.
  • Alex Bowman jumped to third quickest with 17 minutes left in the practice making him the only Chevy in the top seven with his teammate William Byron also being in the top-10.
  • Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and William Byron along with Joey Logano, Austin Dillon and Chase Elliott were racing for several back-to-back laps with 15 minutes left in the session and there were multiple grooves that were starting to come in around the track.
  • Kevin Harvick is on a 35-plus lap run to try and get the balance figured out in the car as they also try and figure out the new tire compounds that are on the car this week.
  • Aric Almirola is happy with his car overall and is third on the speed charts. He’s finished top-10 in the last eight races on 1.5-mile tracks.
  • A huge pack of cars were drafting each other at the end of the session and it was quite a bit of a racy feel with cars switching lanes pretty easily.
  • Denny Hamlin was very animated when describing what his car was doing on the track while using his hands to illustrate his points.
  • Ty Dillon said his car was loose in the front to start the practice and then it got better but was still loose in the rear and overall they never got the car to where Dillon could drive it wide open and turn the car.
  • Ryan Preece said it’s the best car they’ve unloaded with all season.
  • David Ragan wasn’t happy with the bouncy feel in his car all session and said it was bouncing all over the racetrack even after adjustments.
