The hype and unpredictability of last week’s Roval race has paced but that doesn’t mean the track gets easier this week. The nickname for the track should give away its danger as it’s known as the Monster Mile. Dover is a 1-mile track that is entirely concrete for the racing surface and a pretty steeply banked one at that.

Miles the Monster stands outside the entrance to the track in the outskirts of downtown Dover, Delaware and in his outstretched hand sits a car about to be crushed, which is fitting given the 24-degree turns and nine-degree straights that are unyielding in their difficultly lap-after-lap. The track is fairly narrow which also leads to congestion and tricky passing attempts that can cause chaos throughout the race.

Those that know how to navigate it however can make it look easy at times with seven drivers averaging over a 100 average driver rating in the last five races here and all but one of those has led more than 100 laps in that span as well. Position differential can be a fickle thing at this track with just four drivers achieving a mark better than +6.0 in the last five races. Only two drivers have at least four top-fives in that span and only one has five top-10s. There have been five different drivers to win in the last five races here which all lends more credence to the thoughts of unpredictability at the mid-Atlantic track.

This race is the first one in the Round of 12 after Jimmie Johnson, Austin Dillon, Denny Hamlin, and Erik Jones were all eliminated last week after a hectic last few laps that saw multiple incidents and Kyle Larson driving a car ready for the car compacter to the finish line. Spots 4-12 in the standings are separated by just -25 points and 5-12 are 15 points apart making this race another important separation chance with the cream getting a chance to raise to the top.

Drivers To Watch This Week:

Martin Truex Jr.: Another one of MTJ’s home track’s, Dover has been his playground of late with a win, four top-fives, and five top-10s in the last five races with 387 laps led and 245 fastest laps. In the last 10 races at Dover, Truex has eight top-10s and 518 laps led in addition to the win and four top-fives from the last five. As the third-most expensive driver on both sites, he’s a very intriguing play in both formats.

Kevin Harvick: Harvick is the defending winner at Dover and has two top-10s in the last five races with 318 run out front. He was mostly a non-factor in the Roval race though he did make his way near the front pretty easily and that was just a race he was riding around for after having already clinched a spot in the Round of 12 previously. Harvick comes at a steep price on both sites so he will have to really show off some speed at practice this week.

Chase Elliott: Chase nearly locked down his first win at Dover last Spring and has four top-fives in his only five races here. His average finish of 5.0 is second best in the field and a statement of how consistent he’s been at this track. He was able to make it through the first round with solid performances but he is now in the cluster in the bottom half of the standings and needs to keep up his strong run. He’s less than 10K on DK and less than 12K on FD which are both intriguing price tags for him

Kyle Larson: Larson survived literally by the skin of his teeth last week since there wasn’t really anything more than that left of his race car. Larson has exactly the same average start and finish in the last five races here, at 8.8 with three top-fives, and four top-10s. He also has the most laps run up front with 463 of them in that span and 180 fastest laps. He is known as a driver that loves the outside lane and whipping the car through the corners which is exactly what he does here. If he gets a hold of a win, there’s no reason to think he won’t be propelled into the next round.

Jimmie Johnson: JJ came within inches of winning his first race in nearly two years last week until he took out MTJ and wound up finishing 8th, and ultimately on the wrong side of the tie breaker to remain in the playoffs. Johnson OWNED Dover in the last decade with four wins, six top-fives, and eight top-10s in that span and in the last five he’s got a win, two top-fives, and four top-10s. He is coming off his best weekend in a long time, well except for the crash that is, and with nothing left to run for this year he can race with a sense of freedom. That’s not what you want to see from a guy who knows exactly how to run this race to begin with.

Kyle Busch: Remember back in the spring race when I told you that playing Busch was a bad idea because of his history in that race and his well-below-average finishes? Well that flips this week has his last several Fall races here have been very good to the 18-team. In the last five Spring races he’s finished (from most recent back) 35th, 16th, 30th, 36th, and 42nd, and in the last five Fall races in the same order he’s run P1, P2, P2, P10, and P5. That should tell you to play him this weekend all by itself.
