This has been an odd week all the way around. I was unable to watch practices this week due to a home league fantasy baseball draft all day Saturday, and to top it off, there was snow (heavy snow) at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday afternoon and evening. The weather wound up cancelling the qualifying session on Saturday evening and so the drivers will roll off in the order of owner points earned thus far in the season.

The STP 500 is held on the track known as “The Paperclip” also known as the shortest track on the NASCAR schedule at just .526 miles per lap. It’s a relatively flat track with 12 degrees of banking on the outer sections of the turns. It’s also a unique track because it has concrete turns and asphalt straightaways, the only track to have that configuration. With the track being so short and narrow, it becomes very hard to pass on the track and consequently it leads to a lot of laps led for a very few drivers in each race. The short tracks are really the only ones in which it makes sense to play the pole sitter since it’s so hard to pass, there’s less of a risk to negative position differential points.

With weather being in the forecast for Sunday, if the race does get postponed or delayed, the lock time is still the same, 2pm ET.
