Wine country isn’t usually the place you associate with NASCAR racing, and for two years we haven’t, but now this weekend the Cup series is making a return to Sonoma Raceway. The last time we saw Cup cars in Northern California they were on a new, well return to an old, layout as they reintroduced the carousel part of the track which adds a blind corner with elevation change and about a half-mile to the length of the lap up to 2.52 miles.

In general, road courses are not a style of track that lend themselves to high DFS scores and typically the best way to bolster your score is to play for PD or drivers you feel confident will finish highly, even if they’re not starting terribly far back. In the last few races here at Sonoma there has been two drivers leading at least 25 laps in the race while one has led 50 or more in each of the last two. If you have read the Track Breakdown, you’ll have seen the facts to know for this week as well as some more in-depth strategy for your builds. Also take a listen to the podcast as it’s chocked full of good tidbits as well. One thing to note here is that there is no practice this week because it’s not a new track, though they do have a new tire combination on the cars that they haven’t yet run before either together or as separate sets of left side or right side tires.

Average Points By Starting Spot

The charts below show the average points scored by starting spot, regardless of driver in that starting spot, over the last four races at Sonoma. The packages on the cars have changed as has the track and so it’s just a general guide for strategy rather than a hard-and-fast rule about what spots always produce what point totals.
