The Padres showed up ready to hit yesterday, clobbering seven home runs with 20 hits en route to a 19-4 victory. The top two scoring players in DFS were Padres (Hunter Renfroe and Wil Myers ) and two more joined in the top fifteen of scoring (Eric Hosmer and Ian Kinsler). Renfroe posted a double-dong-and-dash day going 4-6 with two home runs, three RBI, four runs scored, and a stolen base. Myers finished 2-2 with two home runs, three walks, four RBI, and four runs scored. Hosmer went 3-5 with a home run, one RBI, and three runs scored. Lastly, Kinsler posted a 1-3 day with a home run, two walks, two RBI, and three runs scored. Hosmer has been fantastic over the last 30 days, hitting .365 with six home runs, 17 RBI, and 20 runs scored. The Padres improved to 28-24 with the win and are currently just a half-game back for a wild card spot.

Strong Outings

  • Patrick Corbin hurled a complete game shutout in the Nationals win over the Marlins. His low strikeout total of five kept him from being in the spotlight of the day, but nonetheless, he was fantastic. He gave up just four hits and picked up his fifth win of the year. He will carry a 2.85 ERA into his next start and is currently third in the NL in strikeouts with 81.
  • Kyle Gibson tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a win over the White Sox. He gave up five hits while striking out nine. It matched his longest outing of the season and the nine strikeouts were his second highest total of the year. He will bring a 4.08 ERA into his next outing.
  • Jake Arrieta hurled eight innings of two-run ball against the Brewers en route to a win. He surrendered just five hits while striking out eight. Arrieta may not be the dominant pitcher he used to be, but he has his ERA down to a solid 3.60 mark to go along with a 5-4 record.
  • Charlie Morton went six strong innings in a win over the Indians. He gave up just three hits and one while striking out 10. The 10 punch outs were a new season high and with the win he improved to 5-0 on the year. Morton has given up more than three earned runs just one time in 11 starts this year and he will carry a 2.54 ERA into his next start.
  • Brad Peacock tossed six shutout innings, but was stuck with a no-decision. He allowed just four hits while striking out eight. Peacock has really found a groove, over his last four starts as he has allowed just one run to score across 23.0 innings of work while striking out 32. He has lowered his ERA on the year from 5.28 down to 3.19 in that span.
  • Mike Soroka continues to be nearly impossible to score on. Last night he gave up just five hits and one earned across six innings of work while striking out five. It was his eighth straight start of allowing one earned run or less, becoming the first pitcher since 2008 to start a season with eight such starts.
  • Tyler Skaggs had his best start of the season, pitching 5.2 shutout innings in a no-decision against the Rangers. He gave up just three hits while striking out seven. He badly needed an outing like this after giving up 14 earned runs across 15.1 innings of work in his last three starts. The lefty will carry a poor 4.40 ERA into his next start.

Hitter Highlights

The Padres had the biggest day as a collective whole, but there were still plenty of strong individual efforts from other guys too:

Rhys Hoskins delierved a bash-and-dash day for his fantasy owners, going 3-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Hoskins is having a good year, hitting .270 with 13 home runs and 41 RBI through 51 games.

Wilson Ramos had a double-dong day at the office, finishing 3-4 with two home runs, a walk, four RBI, and two runs scored. He has three home runs in the last two games and over his last five games he is hitting .600 (9-15) with seven RBI and seven runs scored. Ramos wasn’t the only Mets catcher to provide some fireworks though…

Tomás Nido entered the game in the eleventh inning and got out in his first at bat, but remained in the game. He came up again to leadoff the thirteenth inning and delivered a walk-off home run.

Ketel Marte finished 2-4 with a home run, a triple, a RBI, and two runs scored. It was his second straight game with a home run and the youngster continues to be a solid fantasy asset; he is now hitting .270 on the year with 11 home runs, 36 RBI, 31 runs scored, and is a perfect 3-3 on stolen base attempts.

Domingo Santana had a double-dong day of his own, finishing 2-4 with two solo home runs. The two home runs give him 10 for the year to go along with a .278 average, 41 RBI, and four steals. Much like Marte, Santana continues to be a solid fantasy asset.

Nolan Arenado had a another big game in Colorado last night, going 3-4 with a home run, a double, five RBI, and a run scored. He is hitting .393 with five home runs and 22 RBI across 21 games at home this year. His season totals aren’t too shabby in general though; he is hitting .333 with 14 home runs and 42 RBI. It was the 200th home run of his career and he remains one of the most elite and consistent bats in fantasy on a yearly basis.

Whit Merrifield finished 2-4 with a three-run home run in the first game of the Yankees/Royals doubleheader. It was his seventh home run of the year to go along with his .297 average and eight stolen bases. He continues to be a valuable fantasy asset and may have a shot at his first 20-20 season if he can continue to hit home runs at this pace.

What to Watch for Today

Andrew Heaney will make his season debut against the Rangers. The lefty has been on the IL with an elbow injury, but is ready to go now and is worth a pickup in fantasy. He is injury prone, but when healthy, he is a solid fantasy asset. He posted a 4.15 ERA and had a 9.0 K/9 last season.

Trevor Bauer will seek to recapture the groove he was in prior to the start of May; in four starts this month he has gone 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA across 23.0 innings pitched.

Domingo Germán will take the mound with a chance to be the first pitcher to reach 10 wins this year. He will have a good chance too, as the Yankees will take on a subpar Royals team. German is currently 9-1 with a 2.60 ERA.

Caleb Smith will look to continue his fantastic season when he takes on the Nationals later today. Despite pitching for the 16-33 Marlins, Smith will enter with a 3-1 record and a 2.38 ERA. He has struck out at least six batters in all nine of his starts and has a total of 71 through 53.0 innings.
