Early Game Recaps

The Reds defeated the Nationals 7-1: Anthony DeSclafani fired seven innings of one-run baseball to pickup his fifth win of the year. Phillip Ervin stuffed the stat sheet as he finished 2-for-2 with a home run, four RBI, two runs, and two walks. The home run was his first of the year and he has a strong .315 batting average through 73 at-bats this season. José Peraza had a three-hit day which included a double and a pair of runs scored. Over on Washington’s side, Bryce Harper , Juan Soto , and Daniel Murphy each collected two hits and accounted for all but one of the Nationals hits for the afternoon. Gio González had a rough day at the office; he was pounded for 10 hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.

The Cubs beat the Padres 5-4: Anthony Rizzo finished 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, two RBI, and a run scored out of the leadoff spot. Rizzo is 30-for-81 (.370) in games in which he bats first on the lineup card. Kyle Schwarber doubled and smacked a solo shot, home run number 20 on the year for him. He has now crossed the 20 home run plateau for the second straight year. Pedro Strop worked a clean ninth inning with two strikeouts to pickup his seventh save on the season. He should remain a strong closing option for as long as Brandon Morrow is on the DL. The lone bright spot for the Padres was Austin Hedges who hit a two-run home run.

Afternoon Action

The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 4-1: Nathan Eovaldi continues to look like a great addition to this Sox rotation. After tossing seven innings of shutout baseball in his first start for Boston, he hurled eight shutout innings against the rival Yankees today. That’s 15 shutout innings through two starts for his new club, pretty good stuff. Mitch Moreland and J.D. Martínez provided the offense by smacking a two-run home run and solo home run respectively. For Martinez it was home run number 33, he is now alone at the top of that category (he entered the day tied with José Ramírez for the league lead). The Yankees had five hits and three of them were extra-base hits; they were a pair of doubles by Giancarlo Stanton and a double by Didi Gregorius  in the ninth inning.

Burning Questions

Kevin Gausman makes his first start with the Atlanta Braves, can he shutdown the Mets?

Will Tyler Anderson bounce back from a mediocre start his last time out?

Will Corey Kluber shutdown Shohei Ohtani and the Angels offense?

Will do the Blue Jays muster any offense against James Paxton ? Paxton tossed a no-hitter against them earlier this year.

Stay tuned.
