10 Team Leagues

Mark Canha 1B, OF OAK; FAAB Bid: 10-12% - It’s not that I’ve been unaware of Canha’s production lately. I saw he was getting multi-hit games and showing some decent power. But after Saturday’s Waiver Advice column was published HE BLEW UP! Between Saturday and Sunday alone he had three home runs and heading into Tuesday night he had four straight multi-hit games. Dating back to August 16th he has five homes runs and 11 RBI with an .895 SLG. Even his season-long numbers are great with 22 home runs and a .936 OPS. He’s available in over 50% of leagues on most sites and the only thing going against him is the return of Ramón Laureano , but the A’s would be wise to find ways to keep Canha in their lineup.

Freddy Galvis 2B, SS CIN; FAAB Bid: 6-7% - Despite going 0-for-5 on Tuesday night with a pair of strikeouts, Galvis has looked very impressive since joining Cincy on August 13th. As a member of the Reds, Galvis was hitting .404 with a 1.122 OPS entering Tuesday night. Additionally he’s contributed four home runs, scored nine runs, and driven in 11 runners. He’s performed well when batting second for the Reds and he was hitting eighth in Tuesday’s matchup where he had a poor outing. If they can consistently fit him in towards the top of the lineup then the production should hold up, but expect some regression in batting average and OPS.

Dexter Fowler OF STL; FAAB Bid: 5-7% - As frustrating as it’s been for the Cardinals and Dexter Fowler since his debut with the team back in 2017, 2019 has proven to be his redemption tour with the organization. With the Cardinals in the midst of 15 wins in their last 18 games, Fowler touts a .403 OBP in that span with 12 runs scored and 19 RBI. Yeah even in the leadoff spot he’s still contributing a RBI each game in this run for St. Louis. His season-long batting average of .249 is a bit weak, but he’s a pretty patient hitter that draws enough walks to have a .349 OBP. If you’re in need of some infield help scroll on down to the deep league section if you’re looking for a piece of that Cardinal Pie.

12 Team Leagues

Matt Magill RP SEA; FAAB Bid: 12-15% - Magill made last weekend’s Waiver Advice column and he rewarded the readers with a save on Sunday. He is prone to getting knocked around occasionally as evidenced by his relief appearance last Wednesday where he took the loss against the Rays. But at least in the other four appearances since August 17th, Magill has successfully converted those save opportunities. And he’s very available. Consider him the most eligible bachelor on the waiver wire and you should give your rose to him because you can’t spell “closer” without “rose.”

Mitch Keller SP PIT; FAAB Bid: 5-7% - Ohhhhhh the vast possibilities and risks that come with starting Keller. It’s a gamble, but his confidence is sky high after recording nine strikeouts against the Reds. In his last three starts since being recalled by the Bucs, it’s been a mixed bag of results. He had a good start and a great start with a bad start sandwiched in between. Still following? In brief, he has 18 strikeouts over those three starts and he’s allowed just five free passes. The long ball is still a big concern, but that’s a growing pain with rookie pitchers. Later today he draws the Phillies at home before facing the Marlins at home next Tuesday.

Jon Berti 2B, 3B, SS, OF MIA; FAAB Bid: 4-5% - With the news breaking that BrIan Anderson would be done for the year, I wasn’t anticipating any more Marlins in the Waiver Advice column, but it’s hard to ignore what Berti has been doing lately. Aside from the multi-position eligibility, he has three stolen bases since Friday and he’s scored a run in five straight games. Since being called up again by Miami on July 31st, Berti has definitely taken advantage of this opportunity. He’s hitting .292 with seven steals over the past month and Miami has moved him to the leadoff spot. It’s been a nice story for the 29-year-old rookie and while his production might get swept under the rug because of where he plays, don’t overlook Berti to contribute for any of your infield slots.

15+ Team Leagues

Tommy Edman 2B, 3B, SS, OF STL; FAAB Bid: 7-8% - Edman doesn’t have a ton of power, but he helps in numerous categories and he has a ton of roster flexibility. Dating back to August 9th Edman has only seven extra base hits, but he’s scored 15 runs. Add in the .379 batting average in that span and the trio of stolen bases and he’s an all-around solid fantasy contributor. The Cardinals are pretty hot right now as explained above in the Fowler section and they’ve launched themselves into first place in the NL Central hitting their stride at the perfect time. Edman either hits second or seventh which is awfully annoying, but when he’s locked in the two-hole he’s a threat for extra plate appearances and runs.

Tony Gonsolin RP, SP LAD; FAAB Bid: 5% - Gonsolin’s only SP-eligible on Yahoo so he’s a better addition on ESPN where you can slot him in as a reliever. In four appearances (three starts), Gonsolin is 2-0 with a save dating back to July 30th. He doesn’t record a ton of strikeouts, but he also doesn’t get hit too hard and he doesn’t allow too many walks. And keep in mind he has the Dodgers providing run support, so in a deep league he’s pretty valuable. Gonsolin has some tasty matchups on the horizon with the Diamondbacks on the road on Friday and the Giants at home next Friday.

Brock Burke SP TEX; FAAB Bid: 2-3% - Brock Burke is surprisingly 30% owned at the moment on ESPN. And not to be a Debbie Downer, but the players on ESPN aren’t as “savvy” as the players on other sites. And yours truly wanted nothing more than to leave Burke out of this piece. However, then you realize he gets the Mariners in his next start. The M’s have won eight of their last 14 games, but they’re far from the hot-hitting team we saw in Japan five months ago. Seattle has once again fallen to dead last in the AL West after making several offseason transactions and we’re likely to see Jerry Dipoto make many more in the coming offseason. Alas, the Mariners are bad so you should at least entertain the idea of using Burke this Saturday. You can even hang on to him for next week’s start as well as he draws the Orioles.
