Coach David Quinn was happy with the play of Alexis Lafreniere on the Rangers top line.

Lafreniere, in his fourth NHL game, moved up to the first line with Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider and although he was held pointless once again, he acquitted himself quite well. “I thought that line had some good moments,” Quinn said Friday of the top line. “Alexis continues to do good things, and he’s going to continue to get better. It’s Game 4 into his NHL career. I just love his passion, his enthusiasm, before the third period him and Kreider are talking about he’s going to get his first point. I just like a lot of the things that he does. And again, he’s learning on the go. That’s not easy to do in this league. It’s just fun to watch him continue to work at his game and very coachable, wants to learn.”

Janne Kuokkanen has moved up to the second line in practice.

Kuokkanen has some offensive upside but has been buried as a bottom-six forward through the first four games of the NHL season as he has been held pointless. Kuokkanen moved to the wing with Miles Wood and Travis Zajac. "It gives him an opportunity to provide more offense to the top end," Ruff said of Kuokkanen. "Gives him a better look." While we cannot recommend Kuokkanen at this time, he may have some fantasy value shortly.

Nick Merkley practiced on the third line Saturday after the Devils activated him from their taxi squad.

Merkley started the season in Finland with Assat Pori of the SM-liiga where he picked four goals and 13 points in 19 games before the Devils ended their loan agreement. Merkley lined up with Nikita Gusev and Pavel Zacha and that trio could provide the Devils with some extra scoring heading into Sunday's matchup against the Islanders.

The Winnipeg Jets will retain 26 percent of Patrik Laine's salary and cap hit.

Laine was dealt to Columbus with Jack Roslovic for Pierre-Luc Dubois and a third-round pick in 2022. Laine is currently out with an upper-body injury and still has to quarantine in Columbus for seven days so he could be in the Columbus lineup as early as January 31 versus the Blackhawks. Laine has two goals and an assist in only one contest thus far this season. He lacks a first line center in Columbus but is still expected to be the big goal scorer the Blue Jackets have been missing since Rick Nash left town.

Pierre-Luc Dubois said that the reason he wanted to leave the Columbus Blue Jackets was not because of coach John Tortorella.

Dubois was adamant that he wanted out of Columbus once he signed a two-year deal last month and some of the speculation was that he was at odds with the Blue Jackets coach. Dubois knew going in what kind of coach Tortorella was and that he had the players best interests at heart. “The consensus I got, was that he helps guys, he motivates guys, he gets guys going. For some people, that might be the reason, but it’s not,” he said when confirming it wasn’t the coaching that led him to want out. “I can take it, it’s nothing personal.” Dubois went on to say that it was hard for a 20-year-old to see that Tortorella was trying to help him but when he looks back on his career, he'll know how much Tortorella helped and made him a better player.

The Carolina Hurricanes have placed forward Jesper Fast on the COVID-19 protocol list.

That gives the Hurricanes six players on the list and rumors have it that Tuesday's contest against Tampa Bay will also be postponed. “So much is unknown,” Canes coach Rod Brind’Amour said Thursday on a media call. “We always want to err on side of caution. We’ve done all the protocols, done a great job. Obviously it didn’t matter. It got into our room.”

Mitchell Stephens could be out for a while after suffering an apparent leg injury Saturday.

Stephens got tangled up, fell awkwardly and was forced to leave the game in the third period Saturday against the Blue Jackets. Erik Cernak was also hurt in the contest but it didn't seem to be as serious. "Stephens doesn't look like he's coming back anytime soon, but again speculation," coach Jon Cooper said. "Cernak we'll have to evaluate here over the next couple days. But, yeah, Stevie might be out for a bit." Stay tuned.

Evgenii Dadonov scored his first goal as a member of the Ottawa Senators Saturday.

The Senators big free agent signing in the off-season, Dadonov had gone goalless in his first four games, picking up but one assist. Look for a lot more from the crafty winger as he is capable of a 40-45 point season this year.
