The NHL season is in full swing and that means so is fantasy hockey! It’s a long grind to get to the playoffs, and an even tougher challenge to win it all. Like every year, injuries are going to happen to key players, which means we need to be active on the waiver wire. The waiver wire can help you win a championship, so it’s important to add the right players at the right time. Let’s take a look at which players are worth looking adding for the upcoming week.

Alex Galchenyuk - Arizona Coyotes - Center

The first half of Alex Galchenyuk’s season with the Coyotes hasn’t gone according to plan. The 24-year-old started the season hurt and has managed to score just six goals to this point. That being said, Galchenyuk has been moved to the wing recently and that might be a good thing for fantasy owners. Arizona would like him to play center in the NHL, but that’s not an easy position to master. Over the last two weeks, the Milwaukee native has score three goals and added three assists. That 33% of his season point totals. He’s only 35% owned on Yahoo!, so he’s available if you’re looking to add a forward with a crazy amount of skill who just hasn’t been able to score goals so far this season.

Andreas Johnsson - Toronto Maple Leafs - Winger

If you aren’t familiar with Andreas Johnsson, it’s time to get to know his name. The 24-year-old has found a home on the second line with Auston Matthews and William Nylander.  Over the last six games, Johnsson has collected two goals and added four assists. When you are playing with one of the best players in the league on a regular basis, you’re bound to pick up points. He’s 8% owned on Yahoo!, so you can probably find him in deeper leagues too. As long as he continues to see top-6 minutes, he deserves to be on your fantasy hockey team.

Brandon Pirri - Vegas Golden Knights - Winger

It’s amazing that Brandon Pirri isn’t able to crack an NHL lineup. The 27-year-old is destroying the AHL with 42 points (18G, 24A) in just 29 games and he’s collected nice points (6G, 3A) in seven NHL games this season. He’s a top six forward who can score goals at the nHL level, but for whatever reason, he’s not getting his opportunity. If you have a free roster spot, Pirri is a nice player to stash. He’s an excellent depth player for a fantasy team to have. Let’s hope that returns to the NHL sooner rather than later.

Nick Leddy - New York Islanders - Defence

It’s easy to forget about Nick Leddy because he isn’t a defenceman that produces a ton of goals, but he’s a solid blueliner that could finish the season with 40 points. The veteran defenceman has only one goal this season, but he’s collected 13 assists, four in the last four games. The Minnesota native is on the top power play for the Islanders, and he’s playing just over 22 minutes per game. He’s below 30% ownership on both sites, so he’s available for fantasy owners who need a defenceman. If Leddy can put together a strong second half of the season, there’s no question he can eclipse the 40-point mark.

Max Lajoie - Ottawa Senators - Defence

The rookie defenceman came flying out of the gate to start the season, but over the last couple of months, the kid has come back down to earth. Lajoie started the year with seven points in his first six games. Since then, he’s managed to collect just six points in 31 games. With fellow defenceman Thomas Chabot still out for a couple of weeks, Lajoie is getting a chance to quarterback the top power play unit and his minutes continue to increase. He’s a short-term solution at this point, but if can turn his season around and start collecting more points, maybe he can become fantasy relevant for the remainder of the season.

Robin Lehner - New York Islanders - Goalie

It’s only taken half a season, but it looks like Robin Lehner is starting to run away with the starting job. Thomas Greiss was amazing in November, but the same can’t be said for December. He stumbled through the month with a 2.96 GAA and a .899 SV%. On the flip side, Lehner has been outstanding of late, posting a GAA below 1.50 and a SV% above .950% in his last eight starts. He’s also won seven straight games. That’s elite goaltending if you ask anyone. If everything goes according to plan, Lehner will continue to see the majority of his teams’ starts. His ownership is starting to creep up there (61% on Yahoo!), but you can probably still find him on the waiver wire in some shallow leagues. His hot streak will cool off at some point, but right now, he deserves to be on your fantasy hockey team.
