The NHL season is in full swing and that means so is fantasy hockey! It’s a long grind to get to the playoffs, and an even tougher challenge to win it all. Like every year, injuries are going to happen to key players, which means we need to be active on the waiver wire. The waiver wire can help you win a championship, so it’s important to add the right players at the right time. Let’s take a look at which players are worth looking adding for the upcoming week.

Paul Stastny - Vegas Golden Knights - Center

Paul Stastny has missed the first 30-games of the season due to a lower-body injury, but he’s ready to play and should be added to most fantasy hockey teams. The veteran forward is expected to skate on the second line with Max Pacioretty and Alex Tuch. He’s also expected to see a healthy dose of power play minutes. He’s only 22% owned on Yahoo!, so if you need some depth down the middle of the ice, Stastny is an excellent option.

Alex Chiasson - Edmonton Oilers - Winger

Playing with Connor McDavid can really do wonders for your career, just ask Alex Chiasson. The 28-year-old is now up to 14 goals this season, a new career high, and leads the league in shooting percentage at 30.4%. There is no way he can maintain that Sh%, but he’s slowly becoming a fantasy relevant hockey player thanks to his centerman. As long as Chiasson continues to play on the top line and top power play unit, he should be on your fantasy team. His hot streak will end, but for now, you just can’t let him sit on the waiver wire if you need scoring help.

Anthony Cirelli - Tampa Bay Lightning - Center

It’s really easy for Anthony Cirelli  to get lost behind players like Steven Stamkos and Brayden Point, but the kid is starting to show the hockey world that he could be just as good as the other two. The 21-year-old is now riding a four game goal streak, pushing his season total to nine in 33 games. He’s not seeing any power play time, so his fantasy value is limited. That being said, the Ontario native is hot, and in deeper leagues where players are hard to find, Cirelli makes for a nice short-term solution to a team in need of some scoring. At 7% owned, he’s widely available.

Darnell Nurse - Edmonton Oilers - Defence

With Oscar Klefbom out for an extended period of time due to a broken finger, Darnell Nurse becomes a hot commodity on the waiver wire. The 23-year-old is expected to take over the top power play role in Klefbom’s absence, and that should help him rack some points. In 33 games this season, Nurse only has 14 points (5G, 9A). He’s already 46% owned on ESPN, so if you find him available on the waiver wire, it’s best to pick him up before someone else does.

Vince Dunn - St. Louis Blues - Defence

With Alex Pietrangelo out for the next couple of weeks, everyone is running to add Colton Parayko, which looks like the logical thing to do. Here’s a better idea: add Vince Dunn. He’s seeing time on the top power play unit, which is always key when you are looking to add a defenceman to your fantasy hockey team. Neither Parayko or Dunn have racked up a bunch of points this season, but even once Pietrangelo returns, there’s a good chance that Dunn keeps his spot on the top unit. The 22-year old is only 5% owned on Yahoo!, so he’s widely available in comparison to Parayko, who is already 57% owned. Maybe Dunn isn’t a long-term solution, but he has the highest upside.

Matt Murray - Pittsburgh Penguins - Goalie

Matt Murray made his return to the crease last night after missing nine games with a lower-body injury. It was his first win since October 25, which kind of says a lot about how Murray’s season is going. There is still hope that the two-time Stanley Cup champion can turn his season around, but some fantasy owners may not want to wait for it to happen. He’s 77% on both sites, which means that he is available in some shallow leagues. It’s a risk starting Murray, but he can turn his season around. It’s more realistic to acquire the Pittsburgh goaltender via trade, but if he is for some reason on the waiver wire, take a chance and add him. What do you have to lose?
