The NHL season is in full swing and that means so is fantasy hockey! It’s a long grind to get to the playoffs, and an even tougher challenge to win it all. Like every year, injuries are going to happen to key players, which means we need to be active on the waiver wire. The waiver wire can help you win a championship, so it’s important to add the right players at the right time. Let’s take a look at which players are worth looking adding for the upcoming week.

Robby Fabbri - St Louis Blues - Winger

Remember when everyone was talking about how good Robby Fabbri was going to be? Feels like the kid has fallen off the planet, but after two serious knee injuries, he’s back playing hockey. It’s only a matter of time before he gets his shot on the top line with Ryan O’Reilly and Vladimir Tarasenko, and you will want to own him when that time comes. He’s 3% owned on Yahoo!, so he’s very much available on the waiver wire. He’s a depth player add in most 10-12 leagues, but in deeper leagues, he can be a real asset. Scoop him out now and let’s see how this works out.

Drake Batherson - Ottawa Senators - Center

This kid is going to be a really good player in the NHL one day. Since making his NHL debut earlier in November, the 2017 fourth round pick has picked up five point in five games while averaging about 14 minutes per game. He’s less than 1% owned in ESPN leagues and his upside is there as long as he continues to see top line minutes with Duchene and Boedker. The rookie will not keep his point-per-game pace all season, but he could be a nice short-term solution with so many injuries hitting fantasy teams.

Lars Eller - Washington Capitals - Center

With Evgeny Kuznetsov still out of the lineup, Lars Eller has found a nice home on the second line and on the top power play unit. He’s never been known for being an offensive player, but he’s getting the opportunity to play in the top-6 and that should improve his fantasy production, at least until Kuznetsov returns. This is another short-term solution for a fantasy team that is trying not to fall behind because of injuries. He’s 3% owned on Yahoo!, so he’s widely available across most leagues.

Shea Theodore - Las Vegas Golden Knights - Defence

We really haven’t talked much about Shea Theodore this season. In fairness, he hasn’t really done much up to this point to warranty much attention, but that could change over the next few weeks. Colin Miller is currently on the top power play unit, but that spot should be occupied by Theodore. There’s no question that the Vegas defenseman has the skill to rack up points, but for some reason, it hasn’t translated into point this season. He’s probably a depth add in 14-16 team leagues.

Shea Weber - Montreal Canadiens - Defence

Can’t believe we are talking about Shea Weber being available on the waiver wire, but here we are. If your league doesn’t have an IR spot, there’s a good chance that Weber is still on the waiver wire. He’s expected to be back by December, and that’s just around the corner. He’s only 53% owned on ESPN, which is 3% less than last week! This isn’t the time to be dropping Weber in fantasy leagues. Once he comes back, the Canadiens’ captain will retake his position on the top power play unit with that cannon shot. If by a miracle he’s still available in your league, add him.

James Reimer - Florida Panthers - Goalie

Another week, another goalie out with an injury. Roberto Luongo left Friday’s game with a lower-body injury and it looks like he could be out more than just a couple of days. He’s already missed time this season due to injury, so the Panthers might want to play it safe with their starting goalie. In the meantime, James Reimer will take control of the starter’s crease. He really hasn’t been that great this season, posting a 3.05 GAA and a .893 SV%, but most waiver wires are very thin and Reimer is going to get the bulk of the starts. If you spot start him correctly, he won’t hurt your team.

Mikko Koskinen - Edmonton Oilers - Goalie

The Oilers are a terrible hockey team, but Mikko Koskinen is one of only a handful of players on that team that are actually good. Cam Talbot is the top goalie in Edmonton, but for how long? He hasn’t been great this season and Koskinen is starting to get more and more starts. He’s 5-2-1 this season with a 2.57 GAA and a .914SV%. The Oilers will continue to suck, which really limits Koskinen’s upside, but the 30-year-old could at some point this season take over the starting job from Talbot. It sounds like a crazy idea, but it’s not out of the question. He’s already 25% owned on Yahoo!, so if you have a chance to add him now, you probably should. He’s worth the risk and the roster spot.
