Below are is a breakdown for Sunday’s four-game NHL DFS main slate starting at 5:00 PM ET followed by example lineups. Please note that the pivots in the DK Hybrid lineup are intended to skew more toward GPP plays.

Teams to Target

We’ll start by eliminating Arizona and New Jersey as teams to consider. The Devils are by far the biggest underdog of the slate, and the Coyotes have one of the four worst matchups in the league against Pittsburgh per xGA.

The team that is heavily favored against New Jersey is Tampa. The Bolts played last night, but the Devils did as well, which mitigates the concern about Bolts on a back-to-back. The guys on the top power play unit are Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos (that’s the top line), Alex Killorn, and Victor Hedman. Except for Stamkos on FD and Killorn/Hedman on DK, all of them are priced reasonably on both sites.

The team with the best matchup of the slate per xGA is Buffalo in Detroit against a Red Wings team that allows the most actual goals per game. The Sabres did play last night which causes some hesitation, but they cannot be ignored with the best matchup on the slate. You might avoid overpaying since they’re playing for the second day in a row, which means Rasmus Dahlin on both sites and Sam Reinhart on DK are out of consideration. But Jack Eichel is in play on both sites, Reinhart is priced well on FD, and defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, who plays on the top PP unit, is priced reasonably on both sites.

Tampa has the highest implied goal total of the slate and Buffalo has the third highest. Between them is Toronto who will take on the Panthers in Florida. Florida’s top six lines above average possession lines, but Florida has not been going top six against top six lately at home. Vincent Trocheck’s line tends to get opposing top lines, but the Panthers try to generate offense for their top line by playing them against the opposing bottom six, which means a depth line should see Toronto’s second. John Tavares and William Nylander play on the second line and top PP unit, which makes them a nice mini-stack. Nylander is noticeably overpriced on DK, so FD would be the spot for that stack. Top PP unit defenseman Tyson Barrie plays enough with Tavares’ line at even and can be included in the stack.

The other team today with a plus matchup per xGA is Pittsburgh who will be in Arizona. Sidney Crosby is likely back tonight as he was centering the second line in practice yesterday, but Evgeni Malkin has better price tags on both sites. Bryan Rust is on Malkin’s wing and continues to be severely underpriced on FD. Defenseman Kris Letang plays on the top PP unit and is priced well on DK. UPDATE: Crosby will not return to the lineup tonight.

Value Plays

Tyler Johnson is a value option on both sites. He plays on Tampa’s second line and sees work on the second PP unit. He is priced at or under 4K. Kevin Shattenkirk also plays on the second PP unit and is also priced well on both sites. His pair played the most at even strength with the top line last night.

Jimmy Vesey is playing up on the top line with Eichel, and he is seeing work on the second PP unit. He could be included in a BUF1 stack to offset the cost of Eichel, or he could simply be used on his own for salary relief.

Dominik Kahun is playing up on Malkin’s wing at the moment, and he’s nice and cheap on DK at only $3,300. Kahun is delivering on the opportunity to play up the lineup with five points and five SOG in his last two games. Defenseman John Marino is playing on the second PP unit with Kahun, and he’s a nice value on FD.

All four teams discussed in the section above are road teams today, and the best matchup among the home teams belongs to Detroit. For some reason DK has Detroit’s top line wingers grossly overpriced, but Tyler Bertuzzi and Robby Fabbri are priced well on FD. The wingers and center Dylan Larkin play together on the top PP unit as well, and they’re a stack option on FD. Defenseman Filip Hronek joins them on the top PP unit and could be included in the stack. We’ll also note that D-man Mike Green could be a one-off cheap D option on FD where he is priced at the minimum.

If you’re looking for a very cheap forward on FD, consider Frank Vatrano. He’s only $300 above the minimum and plays on the third line and second PP unit. Over on DK, Vatrano’s teammate Brian Boyle is a discount option. Boyle centers the fourth line, but he plays about 12 minutes per night and sees work on the second PP unit. He’s priced at the minimum on DK.

Goalies

Curtis McElhinney likely gets the start for Tampa since Andrei Vasilevskiy started yesterday, and he’s an obvious option with the Bolts being the big favorite of the day. He’s in play on both sites, but he is a better option on FD where he’s priced better and where a high save total is less important as my model has him projected for a below average number of shots faced. Likewise, Linus Ullmark is projected to face a low shot total, so ignore him on DK. But if you need some extra salary, you can save $500 on FD by going from McElhinney to Ullmark.

The goalies projected to see an above average shot total are Louis Domingue, Frederik Andersen, Adin Hill and Chris Driedger. Domingue (or whoever starts for New Jersey on the back-to-back) is out with the Devils being the big underdog of the slate. And Adin Hill with his career SV% of .903 in 22 games is too risky. That leaves Andersen and Driedger. Driedger is quite a bit cheaper, so he’s preferable of the two, and he is also in play on FD. However, the Panthers are a slight dog and the Leafs are a slight favorite, so Andersen is in play if you have the cash.
