Below is a breakdown of Sunday’s three-game NHL DFS slate on DraftKings followed by example lineups. FanDuel’s main slate only includes the two games starting at or after 7:00 PM ET. We only cover slates of three games or more, so we won’t be addressing pricing there, though some of the analysis for the DK slate may be applicable on FD as well.

Teams to Target

Vegas and I agree on a lot tonight, but not everything. Edmonton and Detroit have the two lowest implied goal totals of the slate, and they have the two worst matchups per my matchup stat, so they’re not in consideration. Vegas has Carolina with the highest implied total, and I have them with a plus matchup against Detroit. And finally, we each have Arizona as a middling play, they can be considered but are not a must play.

Where we differ is on the Buffalo-Florida game. Florida has the second highest implied goal total of the slate, but I have them with a below average fantasy matchup. Buffalo, on the other hand, has the best matchup of the slate in my estimation. The Sabres are the only team on the slate not playing for the second day in a row, which is an obvious plus, and they’ll likely see backup Florida goalie Sam Montembeault.

There are not any individual matchups you have to avoid when picking skaters facing Florida, so give me the Jack Eichel/Sam Reinhart mini-stack. Jimmy Vesey joins them at even strength but does not join them on the top power play unit. Rasmus Ristolainen is the D-man to use with them as his pair plays a ton with the Eichel line at even, and he plays on the top PP unit.

If you want to side with Vegas and go with the Panthers, I would recommend their second line as opposed to their first. The first line obviously has huge upside and is very stackable as they stay together on the top PP unit. The problem is that they’re not priced well at all and overpaying for guys in matchups I don’t like isn’t really my thing. Vincent Trocheck centers the second line with Frank Vatrano and Brett Connolly on his wings.

As for the chalk Hurricanes, the top line centered by Sebastian Aho is the play. Detroit’s top line is their only half decent defensive line, but Anthony Mantha is out tonight, which makes that matchup less intimidating. As a result, there’s no individual matchup of any concern when picking Canes. Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov are the wingers on that line, and they stay together on the top PP unit. Dougie Hamilton is the D-man on that top PP unit, and his pair will play some with the Aho line at even.

Value Plays

There is some value down the lineup in Carolina. Ryan Dzingel plays on the second line but plays up on the top PP unit. Martin Necas is on the third line and has one of the best value ratings of the slate per my projections. Necas is running hot with points in five of his last six, and he’s only $3,300.

We mentioned Arizona was a middling option you could consider, and one of their top six lines is collectively a nice value on DK where combined they’ll take up just under 30-percent of the cap. Derek Stepan centers Phil Kessel and Clayton Keller, and they stay together on the top PP unit. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is the D-man on the top PP unit if you want to extend the stack. Christian Dvorak is the fifth member of that top PP unit, and he could be used as a one-off value option.

On the blue line, Mike Matheson has the best value rating per my projections among defensemen. He plays on Florida’s second PP unit, and his pair plays with the second and third lines at even, so he could be paired with anyone from the Trocheck line or as one-off salary relief.

Goalies

With the Canes being the big favorite of the slate, James Reimer is an obvious option assuming he gets the start on the second half of the back-to-back after Petr Mrazek started last night. That said, Carolina is a stingy defensive team that does not allow many shots, so Reimer does not have a ton of room for error. Darcy Kuemper seems like the safer play. The Yotes are a -125 home favorite, and Kuemper ranks third among qualified goalies in Goals Saved Above Average this season.

The upside goalie is Linus Ullmark. This is an extension of disagreeing with Vegas on the Florida-Buffalo game, so the Buffalo goalie should be a contrarian play. The upside comes from the fact that the Panthers have the second highest shot projection per my model, so Ullmark should see plenty of rubber.
